Where to Explore in Bogor
  • Botanical Gardens
    The glorious Botanical Gardens (Kebun Raya) was originally opened by the Dutch in 1917 and it became world renowned during the 19th Century for tropical botanical specimens and its research into cash crops such as tea, cassava, tobacco, and cinchona. The vast park with its rolling lawns, lily ponds and forest groves contains over 15000 species of trees and plants (including 400 types of palms), and its special orchid nurseries house more than 5000 orchid varieties from Indonesia and abroad and the famous (and rather smelly) Rafflesia, the world’s largest flower.

    Opening Hours: Daily between 9am to 5pm (Very crowded on Sunday)

  • Zoological Museum
    Bogor has an excellent zoological museum situated near the palace.

  • Presidential Summer Palace
    The elegant white presidential summer palace, constructed by the Dutch in 1856, is the official residence for the governor general of the Dutch East Indies. It stands at the northern end of the gardens and has more than 300 white-spotted deers in the presidential palace yard.

  • Taman Safari Indonesia
    The Taman Safari Indonesia (Indonesian Safari Park) is located at Cibeureum, Cisarua Bogor, West Java, and was constructed in 1980. This area was actually a non-productive tea plantation of about 136.5's Ha. And was thus given by the local Government Governor of West Java to the Oriental Circus to manage as the Taman Safari Indonesia today. It sits in the Buffer Zone of Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park, stands at an elevation between 900-1,800 meters above sea level, with temperatures ranging between 16-27 degrees Celsius. Taman Safari was established as a national tourism subject by the Minister of Tourism, Post and Telecommunication (late) Mr Soesilo Soedarman and pronounced as the Indonesian Centre for Reproduction of Endangered Wildlife (ICREW). It was also established for ex-situ conservation by the Minister of Forestry, Mr.Hasyrul Harahap, on March 16 1990. The modern zoo with an expansive natural beauty, opened for the public in 1986. The animal collection in that year was around 250 from 100 different species. Some of the wildlife collection at the Taman Safari are protected species not only endemic in Indonesia, but also from the other five continents. Some animals as endangered species need special care to increase their population with captive breeding.

  • Mount Salak
    A hike will be an unforgettable adventure through the mountain. The journey will start from Pasir Reungit camping ground at Bogor and end at Cidahu candlenut forest (Sukabumi). For enjoyable eco-tours, the destinations consist of waterfalls in Cigamea, Seribu, Nangka and Luhur; hot springs in Ciparay, and Kawah Ratu volcanic crater. You can blend among villagers in Cibadak by visiting traditional limestone burning plants, the home industry of tofu, the traditional bean sprouts production, the 'golok' (traditional knife) craftsman, and the traditional village market.
