The title of quarterback is of American source. John Longer De Sauller, Virginia coach and past Yale All-American quarterback, wrote the slice on "How to Play Quarterback," one of his sub headings in generalship. It is quoted below:

"The signals should be given immediately after a play is over, and if a quarterback adheres tightly to this govern, he will find his team working much quicker. Should it become necessary to reiterate an imply, do not reiterate from the crouching place, but stay upright. In this position, the quarterback also can see every part of the divergent line, and mass up the best place to frank the next play.

"In running backs, do not burden any one man with too much work, excluding when a grow is imperative, then use your best man, even if you have worked him hard before. Trick acting should be avoided inside your own 40 yard line, save time is virtually up and you must make or consume the resolute.

"In the spirited, be deliberate in starting the play, but when once happening, go ahead with determination and dash. Always, declare closely the divergent line, and if you find an opponent playing too large, fling a play there.

"If you are ahead at a certain place, do not be scared to work it for all it value, until you cannot addition there any more, then it will be time to try another play."
