Climbing gear is highly specialized and built to be durable, which is important for the many challenges that arise while climbing a rugged mountainous terrain. There are numerous risks involved with mountain climbing that necessitate unique gear that provide intuitive features for the safety and comfort of the user. Luckily, companies like Black Diamond and Patagonia offer a wide range of products that are specially designed for the rugged needs of the mountain climber.

People used to climb mountains wearing tennis shoes and regular rope, but things have changed and the climbing gear that is available has been modified to perfectly meet the needs of the climber. Boots, gloves, harnesses, ropes, racks, belay devices, locking carabiners, helmets, axes, headlamps, sunglasses, first aid kits, camping devices, sewn runners, harnesses, screws, pulleys, pitons, holds, books/maps, and even special underwear are available. Companies like Black Diamond have also made things easier with packs that include many of the most important items, such as the Avy Tools Package. This comes with the new, lightweight QuickDraw Super Tour Probe 265 with quick deployment and five centimeter depth markings, as well as the minimalist, rapid-response Deploy 3 shovel and a transport-friendly Ski Strap.

Clothing has improved greatly over the years along with the gear. Now climbers can be as warm, comfortable and safe as possible regardless of the conditions. Patagonia, for example, has created products like the Capilene 4 Women's Bottoms to wear as a base layer underneath specialized climbing pants. These bottoms are made with breathable Polartec Power Dry fleece that wicks moisture so it evaporates almost instantly and Gladiodor natural odor control.

Climbers also need to consider items such as food, water, sun block, extra clothing, tents, cookware, camping stove, sleeping bag/pad, knife, approach shoes and a chalk bag, which must all be carried to the top. When packing for the climb it's important to pack light (since everything will be strapped to your back) without neglecting to bring anything that you will need to stay safe and comfortable.
