Regular dryer vent cleaning makes the clothes dryer more efficient which saves you money on your energy bills. When lint builds up in the dryer vent system, it restricts air flow and causes the dryer to work harder and use more energy to get clothes dry. A clogged vent is also a fire hazard. Lint is a very combustible material that can easily ignite as the dryer vent overheats from restricted air-flow. Failure to keep the vent clean is the leading cause of dryer fires in the US.

The most common sign of a clogged dryer vent is the dryer takes more than one cycle to properly dry clothes. People often think this is because the heat element is worn out, so they go ahead and put the clothes through 2 – 3 cycles to get them dry. This is a waste of energy that will eventually lead to a fire.

Another source of concern in the length of the dryer vent; it should be as short as possible, with as few bends as possible. The longer the vent, the harder the dryer will work and the greater the chances are of having a fire. Longer vents are also more difficult to keep clean.

When laundry facilities are located on upper floors, or they are not against an outside wall, the vents are often longer and require special tools and equipment to properly clean them. All clothes dryers, especially those with longer vents, should be professionally cleaned and inspected at least once a year. Lint isn’t the only cause of clogged vents. Birds and small animals often climb in to get warm, build a nest and make it their home.

Of these three appliances, the clothes dryer has the greatest chance of causing a fire and is often the least expensive to service.
