Data Recovery From Usb

    View:
Today, you have many devices that use USB technology to connect to your computer. Some of these include your mouse, keyboard, digital cameras, modems and USB flash drives. Of these the most common device that comes in handy for professionals throughout the world is the USB flash drive when it comes to data transfer and storage.

USB Flash Drives

A USB flash drive is the most popular and portable storage device that can be used by plugging it into the USB port of your computer. It is also known by various other names such as pen drives, thumb drives, chip sticks, USB keys or flash drives. It comes in various sizes, shapes and utilities. USB drives consist of a printed circuit board enclosed in metal or plastic.

A USB is an advancement of the portable storage technology. When storing large information, what otherwise takes thousands and thousands of floppy drives, the same is achieved using a USB stick. Using a USB is much easier than using a CD-RW or DVD-RW drive. Further, USB ports are much common in computers which do not have a CD or DVD drives.

Uses of USB

Pen drives have many uses. The primary purpose of use is that of transporting files between computers. For instance, if you need to carry home the files on your school or office computers, all that you need to do is to plug in a flash drive to your computer, transfer the necessary files to it, and then take it home.

Usually your computer boots from the hard drive that stores your operating system such as Microsoft Windows and Linux. With the advancement in the USB technology, now you can boot your computer from these USB drives.

USB Drive Manufacturers

Scandisk, Kingston, Integral, Toshiba and Dane-elec are some of the leading players in the USB flash drive market in the UK today. These USB drives come in handy in various capacities such as 256 MB, 512 MB, 1GB, 2GB, 4GB and 8GB.

USB Drives and Data Security

USB storage devices are evolving at a rapid pace with the introduction of new features in this much accredited technology. New security features such as the offer for encrypted storage is much appreciated. Even in the event of you losing your USB disk, you need not worry about the theft of the content within. Some drives also offer you biometric authentication techniques such as fingerprint censors.

It is for the same reason that USB drives can be used to move large chunks of data around; corporate people are more worried about the theft of intellectual property. On the lighter side, organisations have started taking preventive measures to avoid theft using pen drives. Some have even gone to the extent of filling up USB ports with adhesives to render them useless.

USB Data Loss Recovery

Though a USB drive is more robust when compared to other magnetic storage media, careless use can damage it permanently. Damages can be in the form of data deletion owing to virus attacks, hardware malfunction, and improper shutdown of the USB drive or probably a damaged file system.

In the event that you are not able to read data from your USB drive, you can do a simple data recovery by using many of the USB data recovery software available in the market today. These software help you recover missing folders and files and information from logically crashed drives. It helps you in recovering music, video, digital image pictures, data files and folders from your USB storage media.

In case you do not feel comfortable doing the data recovery operations yourself, you can very well seek the help of professionals in this field. Numerous companies in the UK today offer you invaluable service when it comes to recovering your valuable personal data. They deal with all kinds of USB manufacturers which include but not limited to Sony, Scandisk, Toshiba, Kingston, Integral, and Dane-elec.

USB Drive Protection

Unlike other storage media, USB storage devices are more robust and easily stand the test of time. However, if proper care is not taken, you might end up damaging your drive. Though you have advanced USB data recovery techniques, it is a better idea that you prevent a disaster, rather than facing its consequences.
Data Recovery From Usb
One may think that data loss from USB devices is not so great a danger as data loss from hard disks. After all, the hard drive is used to store most confidential and voluminous data. In the case of USB drives, the threat is heightened precisely because it is such a convenient device. Major inventions are always a result of public demand. A portable storage device which would answer all our needs had resulted in the birth of the USB drive. Since it is so easy to use, people often take important data out in them from workplace computers and then misplace them. If the data is of a sensitive nature, i.e., if it has to do with security, health or bank account details, the resulting disaster can only be imagined. Unfortunately, this happens too many times to too many organisations all over the world. The problem is that pen drives are not just handy, but also the best portable storage media, compared to CDs, DVDs or the floppy. Maximum data loss happens from physical misplacement of this tiny device. In most cases, it would be better to call a detective agency than a data recovery agency.

Ways of Data Loss

Data loss happens from the USB drive in the following ways:

1.Viruses: Any digital storage media where files are being transferred from one system to another runs the risk of virus infection, and the pen drive is not an exception. It is strongly advised that the machine should be thoroughly scanned before inserting the pen drive into the USB port for file transfer of any type. This is especially true for internet downloads. Similarly, a pen drive can also infect a computer when it is attached to it and dumps the data, and the viruses, into its hard disk. There are some companies that make USB drives with a special provision to convert them to read-only mode. These are more costly, and may not always be totally safe against a powerful virus.

2.Plugging in or out: There are certain rules to be followed about safe removal of the drive, and if pulled out suddenly with some files still open and the related programmes running, there is a chance of data loss. This is one of the most common ways in which people corrupt memory stick files. If the USB drive is pulled out suddenly, a flag comes with an ?unsafe removal? warning, but the majority of users pay little attention to it.

3.Accidental deletion or overwriting: This is a problem that can happen with a hard disk too. The difference is that the space available here is so small, that an overwritten file may no more be recoverable. Fragmentation is a much greater threat with a USB, and a data recovery software will fail if space has been made for new data by overwriting it on the older data.

4.Misplacing: As stated above, this is the most common way of losing data stored in a USB drive, and is not recoverable unless a kind stranger had picked up the tiny object you left on the table when you ran out with your laptop after saving all the important files on it for the presentation. This must be sounding sickeningly familiar to many ? except that such strangers usually do not exist.

Data Recovery from USB Devices

Some methods of recovering data lost from USB devices are listed below:

1.There are several data recovery software available on the net. Choose a software that seems to be good enough, download it, attach the drive to the computer and execute the data rescue as per the software instructions.

2.There are also encryption software available on the net. This protects the data contained in the disc by assigning a digital signature or password to it, and this is set by the user to ?lock? all the valuable files and folders on the USB drive. This is a good idea for those who use USB devices for official purposes and have to transfer important data through it.

3.Last but not least, keep a backup of the data content of the USB drive.
