Dealing With Chronic Pain

    View:
Chronic pain is the pain that refuses to go away come what may. So much so the patient becomes mentally affected by it having to deal not only with physical pain but also with mental pain. Acute pain on the other hand heals as the injury heals. If you are suffering from this chronic pain than to manage it successfully you need all the help that you can have.

There are several steps you can take to help you manage the chronic pain in your life. First, one of the most important things to do is discuss the situation with your doctor on a regular basis. You may be taking some kind of medication that your doctor approved, either prescribed or over the counter. If you find that the medication is diminishing in effectiveness over time, you need to let your doctor know so that he can help you find alternatives. It's essential to be in constant communication with your doctors.

Exercise is another tool to help you manage your pain. For an individual with chronic pain, it may be difficult to exercise. You may be able to find a type of exercise that you can engage in, despite the chronic pain. Exercise helps the body manage pain because it allows the body to remain flexible and toned. And, by being in good shape, you can handle the other physical problems that can be the result of chronic pain.

Some of you may want to try out some food supplements which claim to give you relief your pain. But be careful as many of these over the counter cures don't have US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval. Take these supplements only on the doctor's advice. Don't take them if they further complicate your condition or don't work for you.

Another beneficial technique may be to introduce some relaxation techniques into your daily routine. One activity in particular that is beneficial is Yoga. Yoga not only exercises the body but also strengthens and tones your body. Additional relaxation techniques include meditation, visualization, acupuncture, and acupressure.

These techniques provide relaxation for your whole body and teach you to breathe correctly. They help you in dealing with everyday stress and problems of your life.

You may want to think about joining a support group for those people suffering from chronic pain. You'll be able to talk with other people who are going through the same emotions and feelings that you are dealing with everyday. By discussing your own experience you'll not only be helping yourself by talking about what is happening in your life, you may also be helping someone else who needs to hear what you have to say.

Dealing with chronic pain doesn't mean that you have to do it yourself. Ask for the support of family and friends when you find that there are some things that you just can't do for yourself. By speaking about what you're going through you'll feel less alone and able to cope.

You should also keep yourself well informed about your illness. There is host of information available by means of books. This information will help you not only in dealing with your pain but also make you understand the way it affects your life.
Dealing With Chronic Pain
The health benefits of exercise have long been known. But aside from giving you increased strength and a way to burn calories, doing regular exercise is also effective as a means to alleviate body pain. Some of the more common exercise that can be done with minimal or no professional help at all include the following:

Aerobic exercise.

Jogging, walking, and sprinting are excellent forms of aerobic exercises --- activities that are generally good for promoting cardiovascular health. Individuals who want to engage in this kind of exercise are advised to start slowly and gradually increase frequency, intensity, and range of motion over time. This will help prevent overexertion and unnecessary body aches. Over several months, work up to a regular routine of working out for 20 to 30 minutes, at least three times a week. Individuals with joint problems may engage in low-impact exercises like stationary biking and brisk walking.

Strength training. Strength training exercises help build stronger muscles and bones. In general, people with strong muscles and bones are less prone to develop chronic pain. Dumbbells, barbells, and various fitness machines can be used to increase one's strength and improve the physique. People who do not have their own gym equipment can still perform strength training by doing push-ups, pull-ups, and other exercises that use their own body's weight for resistance.

Stretching. Increasing one's flexibility also helps promote better pain management since it can de-stress nerves and muscles that experience pain due to structural imbalance or a physical injury. Yoga and pilates are among the most popular forms of exercise for stretching.

Exercise and other physical activities may aid in pain relief because they promote the release of endorphins. According to medical research, endorphins help reduce pain sensations while providing a certain degree of relief from stress and anxiety. Before engaging in exercise and sports activities, be sure to check in with your doctor periodically to be sure you're not pushing yourself too hard. Improper execution of exercises may lead to unnecessary physical strain or injuries. In addition to these precautions, people with injuries, medical conditions, or spinal problems should consult a doctor before beginning any sports or fitness program. Some medical conditions may be aggravated by certain exercises or physical movements.

Individuals who want to use medication for pain relief should follow instructions carefully and seek the approval of health professionals to reduce the development of side effects, drug interactions, and allergies. Pain relief and management is a major area of medical care which requires having right information, attitude, and common sense to follow safety precautions in doing exercises or engaging in sports.

Pain can cause a dramatic decrease in one's quality of life and engaging in the right sports or activities and exercise can make all the difference. With so many advertisements for pain remedies on TV and in magazines, people who experience pain often take the easy way out and use off-the-shelf products that are found in grocery store stocks. People who buy these products often ignore the possible side effects that many of these products can cause.

Indeed, people should always consult their doctor first before taking any medication or before engaging in any sport or fitness routine. Getting a medical examination and the advice of a doctor would help prevent the development of injuries, fatigue, and other unwanted effects. These health professionals may also provide a better understanding of body mechanics, posture principles, and proper lifting techniques --- all of which are factors that affect a person's chronic pains. Proper execution of exercise techniques may provide long-term pain relief and enable individuals to reduce the use of pain medications.
