Laser dentistry is a totally new paradigm in dental medicine that is rapidly gaining popularity among dental practitioners. Laser treatment makes use of recent advances in laser surgery to produce faster, safer, and less painful treatment techniques that have much less risk than the standard of care. In the following paragraphs we will discuss some of the benefits of laser dentistry over traditional dental treatments. We will additionally delve into a number of the main reasons why laser dentistry services remain challenging to locate regardless of the tremendous empirical support for the efficacy and lack of risk involved with laser dental treatment.

As far as much of the medical field has come during the past half century, established dental treatments are still clumsy and antiquated. An ordinary filling, for example, requires drilling into the tooth enamel with a tiny drill bit. There is a great deal of risk that your tooth will crack open in this simple procedure, in which case an eventual loss of the tooth would likely be precipitated.

After the hole has been drilled, a bit of metal amalgam or ceramic is jammed into place, with an expectation that the piece of amalgam will wear out and require replacement in just a few short years. By the time that is the case, there will often be a need for even more drilling. After the hole becomes large enough, a root canal will become unavoidable. This procedure involves the whole inner section of the tooth getting drilled out, killing the delicate neural tissue that exists there.

Dental laser treatment alters this dynamic a great deal. A dentist who uses laser techniques to repair a cavity will likely not need to use any anesthetic. There are no moving parts in the laser dental machinery and also little risk of overheating or of cracking the enamel. The laser actually destroys the bacteria that create the cavity in the first place, which means there is a significantly reduced chance of complication after the procedure. Also, much less of the healthy tooth tissue is destroyed during the procedure, and the end result will likely last significantly longer.

This article has used the basic dental filling as an example, but laser dental technique has more to offer than this type of everyday operation. Dental lasers also allow for dental surgery that is extremely clean and precise. Procedures that have used these techniques often present no need for sutures or stitches, produce minimal blood loss, and have a greatly reduced danger of becoming infected because the laser itself actually destroys the bacteria that are living at the surgery site. Because of this, oral surgery that uses laser technology usually heals quite a bit more rapidly and quite a bit more cleanly than the usual oral surgery modalities.

The main reason why it is currently so challenging to locate a laser dentistry practitioner is largely because the technology is simply still so new. The equipment is still quite expensive, and there are still only a few dentists who have proficiency in using it. Due to the dramatically increased efficacy and safety of these types of treatments, it is almost certainly guaranteed that they will be more widely available as time goes by, as a growing number of dentists become trained in how to use them.
