Does Diet Soda Make You Fat

    View:
Infact, one of the first questions that many personal trainers ask theirnew clients is, "How many sodas do you drink in a day?" After all, thehigh fructose corn syrup found in the vast majority of soft drinks inthis country is proven to be loaded with calories that send insulinlevels (with a subsequent fat-storing physiological response) into thestratosphere.

Pretty simple, right? Make the switch, and you're off to the fat loss races. Unfortunately, that doesn't appear to be the case.

In2005, Texas researchers declared that the risk of obesity increases by41% for each can of diet soft drink that you consume. An increase of41% for EACH can is definitely not a good scenario.

Logically,we agree that it simply doesn't make sense. Diet colas contain nocalories, so how can fewer calories (compared to regular colas) lead toweight gain?

The answer to that question turns outto be fairly complex. Everyone has heard the joke, "I'll take asuper-mega-cheese-bacon-mayo burger with an ultra-giant french fry,please...and a diet coke. I'm on a diet!" It turns out that, intentional or not, the joke is reality for most.

There are actually two major reasons that diet sodas may actually lead to fat gain.

Thefirst is psychological and behavioral. When people switch to dietcokes, they often start to cheat a little (or a lot) on their foodintake. Someone that switches to diet colas from 4-6 regular sodas eachday may logically think that they are now entitled to cheat a fewtimes. After all...they are now doing "better". However, it's easy torack up a few hundred extra calories having "just one more".

Thesecond reason is that your body is smarter than we think. When weingest diet drinks, all those chemical ingredients have been shown byresearchers to create an insulin response that potentially leads to fatstorage, and our brain responds by stimulating our appetite. Suddenly,we are now more hungry, and it becomes more difficult to watch ourportion sizes.

Overall, it's a pretty badsituation. The combination of a stimulated appetite, larger number ofpsychological and behavioral "cheats", and an insulin response willhave you sectioning off yet another area of your closet for clothingthat no longer fits.

Finally, all research aside, the real world experience of many personal trainers and fitnessprofessionals show that the majority of their clients lose fat fasterwhen the diet sodas are kept at bay.

The solutionis clear (pun intended): many successful dieters have experiencedsubstantial weight loss after making the switch from diet colas toplain water. Without the chemically-induced insulin response, waterwill help to satiate our appetite, especially when dieting. Inaddition, repeated research has shown that an increase in water intakecorrelates very well with a subsequent decrease in fat deposits.

And wasn't reduced body fat the original goal, anyway?

Make your fat loss journey simpler. Kick the soda habit and grab water for quicker weight loss.
Does Diet Soda Make You Fat
We all know by now that soda (aka "pop" in some areas) is one of the most evil things you can put in your body... the nasty chemicals, the gut-fattening high fructose corn syrup, and a myriad of health problems caused by this carbonated cocktail worshipped by those that don't care about their health or body.

I know that you actually do care about your health and the appearance of your body.

Surprisingly, many people falsely believe that "diet" soda is in some way a good thing for losing body fat. In fact, I hear people all the time proudly state that they eat so healthy and only drink diet soda.

So let's set the record straight...

There is NOTHING even remotely healthy about drinking diet soda. In fact, I've even seen several studies that showed dedicated diet soda drinkers got even FATTER than their regular soda drinking counterparts.

Here's some findings from an 8-year University of Texas study...

An excerpt from the study:

"What didn't surprise us was that total soft drink use was linked to overweight issues and obesity," Fowler tells WebMD. "What was surprising was when we looked at people only drinking diet soft drinks, their risk of obesity were even higher."

"There was a 41 percent increase in risk of being overweight for every can or bottle of diet soft drink a person consumes each day," Fowler says.

Ok, as if we didn't already know how bad regular soda was for us, and now they're showing us studies that diet soda makes us even fatter than the already bad stuff!

There's a lot of complicating factors as to why this occurs...

One reason is that the artificial sweeteners in diet sodas create a negative hormonal response in the body that increases fat storing hormone production and increases cravings for more sweets and refined carbohydrates in the time period after consuming the diet drink.

Another reason is that people may subconsciously think that because they are drinking a diet soda, that gives them more leeway to eat more of everything else, hence consuming more calories overall.

I've said this all along, but the bottom line is that if you're serious about your health and body, soda of any kind (and artificial sweeteners in anything for that matter!) should be avoided at all times, except for very rare occasions when you can't avoid them.

So what is a good alternative to diet sodas?

The best alternatives are good old water with lemon or unsweetened iced teas... you have plenty of options with teas - green, white, black, oolong, red... be creative in making your iced teas and you'll enjoy it more. Plus you'll get a more diverse array of antioxidants.
