There are numerous decorative concrete techniques that are used today, such as engraving, stamping and exposed aggregate. While structural concrete has no real need for any of these techniques, it can be very beneficial for walkways, driveways and patios in homes, businesses and public areas from an aesthetic point of view. There are concrete contractors who specialize in these techniques who can create fanciful designs in new and existing concrete slabs.



Many people choose stamped concrete when they are designing a new structure because it can replicate the look and feel of tiles, wood, flagstone, brick, pavers and various natural stones but it is much less expensive than the real thing. When concrete contractors properly install the stamped slabs it can be very difficult to tell the difference, and a single slab will also stand the test of time much better than individually laid flagstone, bricks, and pavers. Engraving, on the other hand, is more common for existing concrete surfaces because it can enhance the appearance of the surface without having to demolish any of the existing slabs.

Another popular decorative concrete procedure is exposed aggregate, which is created by exposing the aggregate imbedded in the concrete mix. This is usually accomplished by blending colorful aggregates into the ready-mix concrete at the beginning of the process. Very experienced concrete contractors are able to add the aggregate to the concrete at the time of pouring though, which is a bit trickier. The three methods of exposing the aggregate within the concrete are sandblasting, chemical treatment or water pressure. After this they will typically seal the areas where the aggregate has been exposed with a clear coat acrylic, which enhances the colors of the aggregate.

In addition to these decorative concrete techniques, there are also various coloring and shading techniques that further add to the appearance of the concrete surface. These methods add a whole new element to the world of concrete.
