Yet another semi-precious stone, the azurite is a basic copper carbonate mineral that is azure blue in color. It is also known as chessylite. The name of this gemstone has been derived from "lazaward" which is a Persian word and from "azura" which is a Latin word, both meaning blue sky. This gemstone's distinct blue color has caused it to be used as a pigment for many centuries now. It could also come in an appealing pattern of blue-green which is called azure-malachite.



Occasionally, azurite could be coated with colorless wax and could also be impregnated with hardened agents or plastic, though rare, for the improvement of its appearance and durability. This stone is mainly found in many areas all over the globe including Namibia, New Mexico, Arizona, Mexico, Australia, France, Greece, China, Sardinia and in the Ural Mountains of Russia.
