Are you tired of the hassle and mess that comes along with burning real wood in your fireplace? If so, you might want to consider gas logs. Installed in a masonry or factory-built fireplace, gas logs provide the ambiance and warmth of a wood-burning fire—minus the chopping, hauling and stacking. Gas logs are also easy and convenient, allowing you to create an instant, welcoming blaze in your fireplace at the touch of a button. It's the perfect way to make your living room a warm, inviting place for your friends and family to gather, no hassle required.

Vented Gas Logs

The brightest, most realistic flames are those dancing around vented gas logs. These gas logs are made for a fireplace with an open chimney flue so that more combustible air churns inside and fuels a bright, yellow flame. The downside to realism is that vented gas logs can use up to 90,000 BTUs (British Thermal Units) per hour in the creation of that gorgeous flame, but only a small percentage of that is radiated to heat your living space—the rest escapes through the chimney's open flue.

Vent-free Gas Logs

Hands down, honors for most efficient blaze go to vent-free, or vent-less, gas logs. Since the chimney flue is closed during the use of vent-less or vent free gas logs, 99 percent of the more efficient 30,000 – 40,000 BTUs these gas logs are kicking out goes to heat your room. That means a warm space you'll love to bask in. The trade-off? That dancing, yellow flame. Since vent-free gas logs draw in your home's interior air for combustion, the flame produced by vent-free gas logs will be bluer, smaller than, and not quite as extravagant as vented gas logs. Another downside? Carbon monoxide can be released back into your living space. Although Brick-Anew's vent-less gas logs meet federal standards for carbon monoxide emission and come equipped with oxygen depletion sensors, check to make sure vent-less hearth products are legal in your state (a handful of states prohibit vent-free heating).

Gas Logs: Ceramic or Cement?

By now, you know there are a lot of choices when it comes to gas logs. One choice that's especially important is whether your gas logs are made of ceramic or cement. Light-weight and durable, ceramic gas logs are ever popular because of their quick, radiant heat and glowing ember look. They can also be molded into more realistic configurations and can be separate, arrange-able pieces, better mimicking the look of real wood. While cement does not heat as quickly, and may not be as durable as ceramic fiber, it is less expensive and perfectly acceptable if you use your gas logs only intermittently.
