Submitting your website to directories is one of the most important parts of search engine optimisation. This is mainly because it will allow you to get links to your website using your chosen anchor text. However there are some directories that will really help your business. The aim of this article is to consider some of the best directories to add your website to.

Firstly it is worth saying that there is a wide variety of directories out there and it is important to know the difference. The vast majority of directories will give you a link to your website, are free to submit to and will help your search engine optimisation. It is also worth mentioning that many of these directories will not give you any traffic at all.

Another type of directory is the main business directories that might cost you for a listing but will also help you to generate business. We will look at some of the directories that you should definitely consider not only for SEO but also for the aim of generating quality traffic.

Yahoo Directory

It will cost you a bit of money to submit to this directory and you will need to pay an annual fee. However you will get a link that Google will see as really important to your website which can significantly help your ranking. In addition to that you may find you get some business through it as well.

Yell

One of my personal favourites is Yell. The problem with this is it will probably cost you at least ?500 to get a web link to your website from Yell. However it has other great advantages. The main one being is that it is an extremely high conversion rate for people looking for companies in their local area. Most of the people using it will be ready to buy and so a good position could bring you a lot of business. If you are not listed here you could be missing out on a lot of business.

Freeindex

This directory is great as it is free to add your website. In addition you get a link to your website and it has great SEO itself. This means you might find yourself getting some traffic from it. Again people that will be using this directory to look for a business will probably be ready to buy. Other great features of this directory is that you get to add all of your details, have a map and can list your services and opening hours.

DMOZ

This is the biggest free directory out there and actually feeds the Google directory. The biggest problem is that you will need to wait several months for your link to be approved as they get so many submissions. However if you get a link in this directory you will gain a lot of trust with Google and it can significantly help your rankings.

There are several other directories that will help your website promotion and some might be industry specific. It is really important to research the available directories and consider the benefit of each of them. As a word of caution, never pay for a directory unless you think it is genuinely going to bring you traffic and business. It is never a good idea to pay for a link as the value compared to the cost will be too low.
