Sevoflurane is a sweet-smelling and non-flammable fluorochemical used for induction and maintenance of general anaesthesia. Two older types of anaesthetics, isoflurane and halothane, are being replaced with sevoflurane as the years go by. Both of those older types of anaesthesia were manufactured by Halocarbon for several years.

Sevoflurane is administered to patients in a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen, making it the fastest onset and offset anaesthesia on the market today. That means that in surgery where time is a factor, sevoflurane acts quickly so that the surgeons can get down to work to repair the body and save a life. Sevoflurane has the lowest blood/gas co-efficient of all the anaesthetics currently used, and is the preferred method to put a patient under because it causes a very low degree of irritation to the mucous membranes, unlike other types of anaesthetics.

At room temperature, sevoflurane is a liquid and must be administered through an anaesthetic vaporizer that is attached to an anaesthetic machine. The product itself has been used since it was clinically practiced in Japan in 1990, and is now the leading form of anaesthetic on the market today.

Halocarbon is one of the leading companies in the world today for providing anaesthetic fluorochemicals around the world. As the creator of the revolutionary anaesthetic isoflurane, Halocarbon was able to put itself to the forefront of research and development of anaesthetic fluorochemicals for the past 50 years. Many companies around the world have taken notice of Halocarbon's efforts to make anaesthetic safer in the operating room. When cyclopropane was found to be highly explosive when mixed with oxygen, Halocarbon set about to create a safe alternative, hence isoflurane.

Even after isoflurane passed from the operating room with sevoflurane replacing it, Halocarbon worked hard to provide sevoflurane to hospitals around the world, while still manufacturing isoflurane so that hospitals in the developing world could benefit from the cheap anaesthetic.

This is just another way how Halocarbon has helped to change the world of the operating room to make patients safer, and ensure their recovery is quicker with an excellent anaesthetic that is fast acting and non-irritating to the membranes.
