It may seem like a very simple project to hang a picture, and you would be right it is simple. However there are many things that you must think of before just rushing straight in and hammering a nail into your wall! The first thing is to buy the correct type of fasteners to suit your picture and your wall. The simplest fixtures are nails and hooks, however there are many different ones which may be more suitable.

If your walls are concrete, brick or stucco then you shouldn't try using just a regular nail. You would be better off using a concrete wall screw, these will minimize the chances of you damaging the surface of the wall. If you hammer nails into these walls it can cause chunks of the wall to fall out.

If you're hanging a very heavy object then you should consider using a plastic anchor to prevent damage from your wall and keep everything firmly in place. You do need to ensure that you are using the correct type for your wall.

When you've decided which type of fastener to use you then need to decide exactly where you want the picture.

You first need to decide the height of the picture when you hang it. Normally you want the picture to be in the middle of eyelevel, however this isn't always the case.

Once you have decided on the height of the picture then you should then decide where you want it horizontally. This will completely depend on where you want it, normally it's in the middle of a wall, but it can be anywhere!

Hold whichever type of fastener you are using against the wall and fix it by screwing or nailing it. Once it's been fixed into place then you can hang the picture on your wall. You need to be cautious that you don't scratch the wall.

When the picture is hung on the hook then you should take a step back and try to see if it's level. You can adjust the picture until it looks perfect.

If you think the picture is too high or too low then you can adjust the string or wire which hangs your picture rather than having to move the hook itself.

If you intend to hang a number of pictures on your wall then you should be very precise with your measurements so that everything looks good. Start by getting some people to hold pictures on the wall and take a look where they look good. If you want to hang all of the pictures so that they are level then you will need to use a level, you could use a laser level or just a spirit level.

Hanging a picture doesn't have to be that complicated, just think about it for some time. You could also consider using a picture rail so you can easily move the pictures around.
