Has The Divorce Revolution Failed?

    View:
Divorce Culture and its Negative Consequences

Divorce laws were created to ensure that people remain happy in their marriages. However, the divorce culture has succeeded in doing just the opposite. The society, as we know today, would have been completely different had the institution of marriage been regarded with more sacred respect. Constant changing of spouses has changed the meaning of the term ?life-partner? literally.

Divorce has had some serious negative consequences for our society. We will analyse these in detail in our following section.

  • Divorce Has Created Hardships for Children

  • While most couples think that they are going through an emotional roller coaster during and after the divorce, they seldom think what a huge impact divorce can make on the minds of the children. Children have impressionable and fragile minds. They need maximum love, support, and affection during their growing up years. However, what the children of today get is constant exposure to parents fighting and accusing each other during the time of the divorce.

In addition, after the divorce the children get to stay with only one parent. Recent studies have proved that children are better off growing up with both the parents than in a single parent household. Children tend to learn different things from a mother and a father. A child needs both of them in order to develop normally mentally as well as physically.

Children staying in single parent households are more likely to have psychological problems. These psychological problems tend to affect them not only during the time of the divorce but also during their entire lifetime. Research indicates that children whose parents have been divorced more than once are more likely to experience psychological problems than children from intact families. The scars of divorce can very hard to wipe off of the minds of children.

  • Divorce Has Made Families Poorer

  • Research indicates that married people tend to spend and plan their finances in a more efficient manner than single parent households. This can be attributed to the fact that two incomes are better than one. When people live together in a double income household, their standard of living is higher. Divorce increases the number of single income households.

Some of the people are not able to support themselves after a divorce. In fact, some people report living below the poverty line sometime after the divorce because of lack of income. Children too are affected by the change in living standards after divorce. Recent studies have proved that child poverty has increased because of divorce.

  • Divorce Has Destroyed the Sanctity of Marriage

  • Marriage is an institution that should be respected and treated as sacred. Easy divorce has changed people's attitude towards marriage. Signing prenuptial agreements before marriage shows where our society is heading. When two people enter into a marriage discussing their arrangements after divorce, it would be not surprising to see the marriage break down.

Marriage is not a we-will-see-what-happens-later relationship. It is a lifelong commitment to stand by your partner through good times as well as tough times. Now, it is so easy for people to stay together when everything's nice and rosy, but the actual test is about the tough times. Most people do not understand this or are too self-absorbed to understand it. Easy divorce laws do not make people question what went wrong with their marriage. Instead, they aim at instant gratification when the going gets tough.

  • Divorce Has Reduced Adult Happiness

  • The high divorce rates have increased stress and anxiety amongst the adults. It is very hard for people to feel secure in their marriage anymore because it is so easy to walk in and out of a marriage. Somewhere in their hearts, people have accepted divorce as an eventuality. Therefore, they are not able to give their 100% to their marriages and are more likely to divorce.

Even people who remarry are more likely to experience divorce again. Society too has accepted divorce as a trend of the era that we live in today. Therefore, when we see a troubled couple, instead of helping them save their marriage, we give in to the feeling that divorce is an end to every marriage.
