It is very easy to contract head lice, so it is vital to use the correct steps to fix the problem. To begin the treatment, thoroughly wash all bedding materials, including sheets, stuffed toys, pillow cases and blankets in very hot and soapy water. Everything that could have possibly had contact with the person who has lice should be cleaned with ammonia or rubbing alcohol, including combs, hair brushes, hair accessories (bands and barrettes) and hats.



Immediately after you find lice on your own head or someone else's, go to the local drug store and buy a lice treatment shampoo. Shampoo your hair with this medicated shampoo while you wash your sheets and clean other household items. Because the adult louse can quickly jump from one person's head to another, spreading its eggs on the way, be sure to take these measures right away.

You can find the appropriate shampoo to use over the counter or through your pharmacist or doctor. While getting rid of lice is fairly easy, it is time consuming and may be very tiring. Usually, head lice will be killed once the shampoo is applied. If, however, you find that it is still around afterward, a repeat treatment is called for.

Head lice can be difficult to get rid of. If you still find nits and/or lice after one week of using the shampoo, continue the shampoo and take further steps. Wash all of your bedding for a second time, and if you have carpets, have them steam cleaned. Persistent head lice infection may require a visit to your doctor, who may prescribe stronger medication or alternative methods for killing the lice both on your head and in your house.

Head lice and body lice infestation is quite common throughout the world and is not something to be ashamed of. It is more frequently found amongst young children who will share toys, hats, pillows and other items, particularly in the public school system.

Unlike some rumors, lice is not an indication that you or your family is more unhygienic than anyone else. All types of different people with various backgrounds get and have gotten lice.
