Helping Kids Cope With

    View:
Medication certainly has its benefits in headache management for kids but for some, various therapies and techniques can complement or in some cases, even replace medication. The risks and side effects of medication mean that it is often preferable to find alternative ways of coping. Headache pain can be difficult for children, especially when it strikes during school hours or while at play. Prevention is usually the first strategy but when headaches do attack, easing headache pain without medication may be a primary goal.

A Glass of Water

Dehydration, particularly when it's chronic, can trigger headaches in children. The obvious solution is to ensure that your child stays hydrated and consistently drinks fluids. If a headache does strike, however, sipping water may alleviate pain if the headache is due to dehydration. Some kids will also find that a glass of icy water helps to slightly soothe hot throbbing head pain.

Correcting Headaches from Low Blood Sugar

Low blood sugar is a known trigger of headaches and if your child has unfortunately missed a meal or perhaps participated in extra intense physical activity such as sports, his or her resulting low blood sugar may have prompted a headache. Eating a small balanced meal with protein, complex carbohydrates, fat and fibre can help to stabilise blood sugar. Easy and nutritious examples of snack foods to keep on hand for when headaches hit are a tuna sandwich on multi-grain bread, or cheese and crackers. If intense nausea is present with the headache, foods such as whole wheat toast or oatmeal are simple, less likely to exacerbate nausea and effective in raising blood sugar levels and helping any correlating headache pain.

The Three D's

For instant headache relief, the three d's of headaches can be helpful: dark room, damp cold cloth and 'do not disturb.' If your child is at home, tucking him or her into bed, turning off the lights and placing a damp, cool cloth on your child's head can temporarily soothe headache pain. Keeping the surrounding area quiet and not disturbing your child can also be helpful, as noise can intensify a painful headache and more so if it's a migraine headache.

Easing Stress During a Headache

As with most lifestyle factors, it's ideal to consistently maintain changes so that you prevent headaches from happening. If your child is dealing with a particularly stressful situation such as an exam, however, strategies such as deep breathing exercises can provide immediate headache relief. Work with your child to help him or her learn to focus on breathing. Slow, deep breaths in and out can be calming and can help to take the focus off a distressing situation.

Relaxation

Kids can be quite open to learning new things and when it helps their headaches, it's even more beneficial. Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, imagery and positive affirmations can increase your child's confidence and help to prevent and treat headaches when they strike. Relaxation techniques can give kids a stronger feeling of control of their head pain. Affirmations are a way to replace negative statements with positive ones. The stress of dealing with headaches can leave kids feeling very badly about themselves and encouraging kids to take control helps them to understand and cope with head pain. Medication may be required but do try to work with your child to develop alternative coping strategies.
Helping Kids Cope With
My son Josh was scared. You could see it in his little face. Angst was written all over him. His knuckles were as white as his t-shirt. He starred down. “What's up?” I asked with a smile hoping to relieve his fears. “Daddy,” he nervously replied, “I'm afraid I'll get Bird Flu!”

And this from a seven year old! At breakfast time!!

I'm not sure if Josh had heard me talking about Bird Flu or if he heard about it at school. Whatever the case, kids do hear all that is going on around us and need to be helped through their fears before they get a pandemic of the stomach. There are in fact just a few simple things we as parents can do to help our kids work through issues, regardless of the age or gender of our bundles of joy.

A lot of what kids (and especially youth) need is simply an ear. Talking with your child about the issues at hand is vitally important. When I explained to Josh that Bird Flu is very susceptible to heat and that just zapping his breakfast in the Microwave already killed all those bad guys (germs) his face light up like a Christmas tree. I also explained to him a few other facts about Bird Flu including tips on washing hands, covering the mouth when coughing and not kissing the neighbors chicken. Adding a few practical steps can help your child relate to the more complex “how's”, and in this case, even have the added benefit of finally getting those hands washed before meals.

Of course my son knows I travel to Asia and in fact lived in China where influenza is birthed. So yes, I told him too of precautions I take, vaccines which are available against the flu virus and most importantly, that God is in control so I don't have to worry. I suggested to Josh that he too can pray for me when I travel and that he is under God's protection. I took it another step and said we can do something positive and helpful for other kids. We talked about what he could tell his friends at school should they get scared. We talked about how we could pray together for kids in China. And we talked about giving to help fund research. All these things helped Josh face the issue of Bird Flu in a different light.

I know that Josh is not completely over his fears. He hears more and more about Bird Flu and I know that when kids are sick at school Josh wonders of they “have it.” That is why I keep up to date with Josh about what is going on without making Bird Flu an issue or blowing it out of proportion. I hear in his prayers that it is sometimes on his mind, other times not. So I keep a balance in how or when I approach the subject. And of course I make the point to always pray God's protection over us as a family and to keep our house safe. In this way Josh gets a perspective on life which doesn't suggest that danger is non-existent but rather that through action and prayer we don't have to live in fear.
