Hotels In Son Bou

    View:
For years, Menorca has been a favorite holiday island for millions of people worldwide. Many celebrities and royalty spend their free time there relaxing, soaking in the sun and spending quality time with their families. Several celebrities have bought homes in the Balearic Islands in recent years. One of Menorca's prime holiday spots is also its longest beach, Son Bou.

In the Alaior region of Menorca sits the small village of Son Bou. Son Bou, San Jaime and Torre Soli Nou offer some of the nicest beachfront holiday spots available on Menorca. The beach at Son Bou is around 3 km long, that's just less than two miles of golden sands. The width of the beach isn't as wide as some of Menorca's larger beaches, but the length is spectacular. Along the beach you will find several lifeguards and beach bars to provide food and drinks.

Son Bou is home to several shops and restaurants and two large hotels. The two large Sol Hotels offer direct access to the beach. Other accommodations are available for those who prefer to walk to the beach. Many of the bars and restaurants have adapted a British style. Others have chosen a more international cuisine, including Chinese and Indian. Tourists are the primary source of revenue for the island, so restaurants try to oblige all nationalities. Of course there are still several Spanish and Menorquin restaurants to serve the tourist who enjoys traditional foods from the area they visit.

Son Bou's bars and restaurants feature shows on most nights during the six-month holiday season. On the nights they have no shows, they feature quizzes and karaoke. Another great attraction in Son Bou is the giant maze. For the thrill seeking adventurer, there is never a dull moment.

For the nature lover, inland from the beach, there are marshes and a lagoon that is home to several well-loved and well-fed ducks. Many people take chunks of bread to feed the ducks. You have to be willing to get up relatively early if you plan to feed the ducks. By 11 a.m. they are all making their way back to their nests to digest the foods their human friends brought them.

Neighboring San Jaime has fewer hotels and is hosts primarily villas and garden apartments. Torre Soli Nou has more private villas and apartment complexes. Campsites are also available about two miles away from Torre Soli Nou. There is a place to stay for every lifestyle or preference.

Son Bou is a wonderful place for a family holiday. The beaches are impressively clean, and the water is blue and amazingly crystal clear. Like all beaches, the current can be quite strong, so be sure to pay close attention to the red and green flag system. If you are unfamiliar with such a system, ask someone. The resort is fully equipped with supermarkets and tourist shops.

Son Bou, near Santo Tomas is also well known as a naturalist's haven. The further west you go from Son Bou, the fewer clothes people may be wearing. Nudist beaches aren't officially allowed on Menorca, but the area at the west end of Son Bou beach is a widely known nudist beach. The nudist area of the beach has dunes to protect privacy of those who enjoy sunbathing in the nude.

Find Your Feet and Your Food

It should be easy to find your way around on your Son Bou holidays. Son Bou lies at the centre of Menorca's south coast, about half an hour from the Mahon airport. The commercial heart (urbanitzacio) of Son Bou is in the east end of the resort. Here you will find the principal beachside hotels, the supermarket, chemist, medical centre, car hire, and a host of shops including designer stores.

It's also home to a wide selection of places to eat that will satisfy most tastes and budgets. Several bars and restaurants embrace British styles of fare, as well as further international cuisines such as Chinese and Indian. But it is not difficult to sample more traditional Spanish dishes on your holiday; Son Bou has restaurants that will offer the ever-popular Paella, and Menorcan specialities like caldreta (lobster stew) and chiprones (octopus in batter).

Moving west along the beach from Son Bou, villas and family holiday apartments are set in the gentle hillside of San Jaime. The complex at San Jaime has its own version of the essential facilities you find at the commercial centre. Beyond here is Torre Soli Nou, a quieter area of private properties further back from the beach.

Enjoy the Endless Beach

With the largest beach in Menorca, at two and a half kilometres in length, there's no shortage of sand and sea on Son Bou holidays. The sand is white and fine, gradually sloping into clear water, with a shallow waterline making it ideal for paddling and good for small children to enjoy. The beach operates a flag system for the safety of all swimmers.

Out in the water you'll find holiday makers enjoying the fun rides that operate here and a variety of watersports for you to try on your Son Bou holidays. Or perhaps you would rather just look out over the view with a drink from any of the three bars installed along the beach.

Entertainment for Son Bou Holidays

If these bars take your fancy, you may want to try the nightlife of the clubs, quizzes and karaoke that operate during the holiday season. But the area was built with families in mind, so you'll find plenty of entertainment for the children as well. Water slides, playgrounds, a maze, tennis courts, bowling alley, merry-go-round, and a fun train have been assembled along the length of the seemingly endless beach.

Culture and Nature

It's not just fun and frolics on Son Bou holidays though, Menorca's history is also on show for those that like to absorb some culture as they soak up the sun. There are a number of cliff-top cave houses that are remnants of the island's earliest inhabitants, and at one end of the beach is a fort that dates back to the Iron Age.

Running parallel to the beach is a protected nature reserve and sand dune environment. There's an area of wetland reed beds set aside, this serves as a feeding and resting place for many species of migratory sea birds. Aquatic birds like their Son Bou holidays too, you see. Near to this is the hillside area known as San Jaime where you'll find the Son Bou Villas and apartments.

But no-one will blame you if you choose take it easy. With so much beach to enjoy, perhaps the only walk you'll want will be from your villa to the sand!
