For the uninitiated, a beanbag is a pear shaped leather or vinyl sac containing small PVC or thermocol pellets. Beanbags are used to sit, lie down and generally relax. Due to the soft pellets, beanbags mould themselves according to the sitter's curves, thus providing a soft, comfortable pseudo couch which may be used for playing video games, watching movies or to sleep in. The catch if there is one, is that the pellets which make the beanbag so comfortable, are prone to depreciate over time due to use, and become crushed thus loosing their elasticity, and making the beanbag uncomfortable.

When the beanbag starts to feel uncomfortable a refill is recommended, not only because a refill of the pellets will return the bag back to its original state of a comfortable ergonomic couch, but also because as the pellets get crushed, the beanbag may get harmful for body posture, and may cause pains and aches in body parts.

How soon or with what gap of time, should you keep refilling your beanbag? It actually depends on the usage patterns of the beanbag. If beanbags are your primary couch or seats, and is used frequently, then it would be fair to suggest that you'd properly be refilling the bag sooner than if it had been an additional couch in your room and is used only occasionally. It also depends on the manufacturer to some extent. Manufacturers of branded beanbags price them a tad higher but claim that the bags would not need refills for as long as even a year. Beanbags are of course, also available with lesser known manufactures, who might discount the price but can provide no guarantee on the duration up to which the beanbag would not need any refilling. Last but not the least, it also depends on the quality of the pellets you fill your beanbag. It is important to remember that the pellets don't depreciate very fast and even low-quality pellets should at least last for a quarter of a year. Users recommend that the beanbag should be refilled once in 4-6 months to keep it in its fluffy state and keep having a comfortable seat.

Of course, if you feel the refilling constitutes a problem you might try the Foofsac - the beanbag which claims lasting comfort and no needs of refill. Foofsacs are leather or vinyl bags which have shredded urethane foam - the kind of foam used in sofas. This lends the Foof chair maximum comfort, and the chairs can be used for a longer period of time. The regular characteristics of a bean bag are of course present with a Foof chair - like the ability to conform to the shape of the sitter.
