If you've heard it said once you've heard it a million times, communication really is the key to any relationship. When you are dating, engaged, or married to someone good communication skills really can make all the difference. You not only need to learn how to share your feelings, but learn how to listen to your partner. When you can do this, you will have a much better chance of being successful in your relationship than if you don't perfect these skills.



The first thing you need to learn how to do is share your feelings in a constructive manner. Many people believe that they are good at communicating because they tell the other person what is on their mind. Communication is not just about being able to say the words, it's about expressing them in a way that will not hurt or offend another person. You have to figure out how to express what you are feeling without hurting another person, and this really can take a lot of practice. You basically have to learn how to censor yourself so that you can get the jest of how you are feeling out there while also taking the other person into account.

In addition to learning how to share how you are feeling, you also have to learn how to listen. This is not just hearing someone talk, but really listening to what they are saying to you. If you are not good at listening you may find that doing away with all other distractions such as the television, your phone, and your computer helps, too. When you hear them say how they are feeling, repeat it back to them saying, "I hear you saying that you feel as this will allow them to see that you are really listening.

Of course, you both have to need to know how to communicate for it to work. Continue to work on communication skills all the time, because you can never become too good at sharing how you feel and listening to the way that your mate feels. Also, encourage your partner to listen to you and share their feelings in a constructive way. When they do share with you in a constructive way and if they do listen to you, thank them for doing so. This will encourage the same type of positive communications in the future.

Communication is all about give and take and sharing the way you feel in a positive manner while also listening well. This takes practice and you may find that you are better at communicating in some situations than you are in others. Just continue to refine these communication skills as they cannot do anything but help. In fact, you may find that working on your communication skills within your relationship helps you in other areas of your life, too.
