Buying a pool table will be one of the most rewarding investments you will ever make. Playing pool with your family and friends will add a whole new dimension to your fun and recreation. If your a beginner you will learn quickly and with some practice may become the next Minnesota Fats. Make sure you buy quality equipment. A less expensive pool table will be more trouble than it's worth.



Starting with the pool table your first decision will be what size to buy. A professional size pool table is either 8' or 9'long. A bar room table is 7'. You can choose which is best for you depending on the size of your room. Remember the standard pool cue is 57" to 59" long. You will need enough room for the table and for the cue to be able to go around the table's edge without hitting an obstacle.

Almost 99% of all home pool tables have three pieces of slate which make the play field, they will settle over time. When recovering a table all three pieces must be checked and re-leveled. It is very rare to encounter a level table and you would rather take the extra bit of effort to do things the correct way by checking them all. Make sure your table is perfectly level for the maximum amount of enjoyment.

More than likely the balls will be included with the table. If the balls included with your table are the best quality go out and buy balls made of high quality resin. It is worth the extra expense and will only cost about $150.00. Use the cheap balls for the kids to play with.

Next, you will need cues and a ladies' aid, slang for an extended bridge for shots you can't reach. You will need at least four cues and you should probably have a fifth shorter cue for shots where there is an obstacle. Buy a nice wooden cue holder to hang on the wall. A triangle, or rack, will come with the table and last, but not least, you will need chalk. Always have plenty of chalk so you can put pieces in several places around the table. With this, you'll be all set up to begin playing all the various games of pool, and believe me, there are many.

Get plenty of practice in before you invite your friends. They'll think your an pool hustler from the good old days. I guarantee you'll have hours of fun with your new pastime. If you have teenage kids it will keep them and there friends at your house where you can keep an eye on what their doing. Finally, care of your table is minimal. Brush the felt with a soft brush each time you are finished using the table. Add this to your list of supplies. There are brushes made specifically for this purpose. Cover your table with a plastic or cloth cover and it will last for many years.
