Copyediting and similar jobs is one way to work at home. Because the world is moving toward a knowledge based economy, and the internet makes it so similar to transmit large amounts of data between distant places, certain types of knowledge work are being exported to small, individual producers. Copyediting is one of those areas where someone who wants to work from home can dos so with a relatively small investment and little skill.

Currently, a large and growing portion of the world uses English for their commercial transactions. However, there is a significant difference between someone who can understand and communicate at a basic level and one who knows how to fluently express complex ideas and interpret the ideas that others are trying to communicate. Because of this, someone skilled in English who is well versed in advanced grammar can provide services that many people and organizations need. It is an ideal opportunity for anyone who wants to work from home.

The people and organizations that need to hire outside copyeditors tend to be small operations, but some large companies often hire them as well, or subcontract the work to an outside firm. These companies often produce large amounts of paperwork that needs to be checked for grammatical problems, updated, or simply reworded with more appealing language. Often, it is cheaper for them to hire someone outside the company who specialize in such work than to hire someone specifically for such things, when the work may only be required rarely.

This presents a chance for anyone qualified who wants to earn a little money and work at home. By sending documents like press releases, advertising copy, memos, or company newsletters to someone like you, they are hoping to receive high quality work without having someone in the company specialize. On the other side, copyediting work is relatively simply for anyone who knows the rules and has a good eye for grammatical errors. It is a win-win situation for the company and for someone hoping to work from home.

It is never quite so simple, however. Reputation is a large part of work like this, and someone hoping to work at home immediately and support themselves by it may be in for a sudden shock. Once a reputation has been achieved, however, someone doing copyediting work at home will probably build up a network of repeat clients.

Over time, a work from home business may no longer be so small. It may, to all public appearances, resemble any small business, with a professionally done website and even a dedicated phone line for clients. Someone's small side business, originally intended to earn a little extra income by doing work from home might even grow to include employees or subcontractors if done right. Like any work from at home business, the benefit comes not from gaining large amounts of income in your spare time, but by doing something you enjoy doing and being able to have a more flexible work schedule.
