Watching television on the Web might sound like sci-fi to most people over the age of 40, but this is actually a case of the future catching up with us. Internet television won't remain futuristic for long because free web television is finally here. What's more, people have embraced this phenomenon widely and whole-heartedly. As a result, online TV has spurned a whole new society with its own set of rules, dos and don'ts, etc.

Unique Content

The 40+ may not be very comfortable with this idea, but they are bound to accept it one day or another. Web television now comes with its own unique content that is exclusively designed for broadcast over the Internet. These soaps, talk shows and news segments are not viewable elsewhere. For example, if you like a particular episode of a web show then it is quite unlikely that you can tune your regular TV into it or hope to catch the next episode on your local cable.

Interactive Ads

Then the oldies now need to come to terms with yet another type of Internet TV content - interactive ads. While they enjoyed the interactive elements of reality shows on regular offline television, it might take some doing before they accept ads that are also interactive in nature.

Video on Demand or VOD

Another new concept that seems to have been quite well accepted is Video on Demand better known as VOD.

Yes, it's true; you can watch some programs on Web TV for free. The reason why some viewers can access free programs online is varied. Some broadcasters are new and wish to increase the viewership percent of their new content or they wish to popularize their site before making it pay per use or subscription based. Some people may also wish to stream their content free of charge so that absolutely anyone can view the content in order to increase the visibility of their ads. The revenue from the ads provides them enough money to make their efforts lucrative enough.

Reasons Why Internet TV Can Be Free At Times

There are also other programmers who show relatively low quality programs which are quite entertaining. Such programs don't make a hole in their pockets and yet attract enough viewers to make it financially viable for them to continue doing so on an on-going basis. Free content is also streamed in order to protect their turf from the competition and to prevent predators from eating into their market share.

Multicasting is not as expensive as creating shows for offline TV and at times, people may just show their content for free so that any one with similar interest can join the live stream for free. This sharing and "free for all" nature of the Internet has made it the single most popular medium of communication today. All that is required to view the free content is the correct type of plug and play viewer and an Internet connection that supports high speed access to the Internet.
