Large Format Digital Photography

    View:
Capturing the perfect image is far from an easy task. There are many factors which come into play in determining how impeccable your image is from selecting the perfect backdrop, to the color tones as well as the level of exposure. It is only when the perfect symphony of all these elements is achieved that the image is at its most spectacular. But very often, we find that even a small tweak can cause dramatic changes, thus detracting from the inherent beauty of the image. And to correct these, it is not always a feasible solution to start from scratch and re-shoot the image, all over again. It is here that skillful editing comes to the rescue, enabling you to not only correct your image of its imperfections, but also to enhance your picture quality and tone which your digital camera, by itself, may not allow. But the quality of editing is also largely dependant on how effective your editing software is and also how suited it is to your needs.

A majority of photographers, professional and amateur alike are unaware of how important it is to choose an editing software that is perfectly suited to their needs. Although the right kind of software, which is apt to your skills and requirements, does allow you to achieve dramatic results, while ensuring that you have to invest a minimal amount of time and effort, selecting the wrong kind of software may result in quite the opposite consequences. This is because when you choose a software that is either incompatible with your operating system, or entails a large amount of effort to be invested in using it, you are not only wasting a lot of your time, but are also not making complete use of the product in terms of all the features it has to offer. And the primary reason for this is that the software is meant to cater to a category of users who specifically need those features in their editing process and also are more cognizant with the technology the software is developed on.

Your choice of editing software is largely governed by two basic principles: how flexible your software is and also how intuitive it is to your image and the effects you wish to create. If your field of work calls for very high quality images which need to be molded in keeping with the array of purposes they are used for, then a state of the art, Advanced Photo Editor may be just what you're looking for. Common consensus establishes Adobe Photoshop as a forerunner in this category as it allows users a large number of features while also being a lot more reliable than its counterparts. However, this is also one of the most expensive versions of editing software and can be difficult to understand if you don't have any former grounding in digital image editing. Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo is another, more affordable contender in this category, but does quite make it to the caliber of Photoshop. Yet, this is a worthy option if you're on a budget and can make do with a moderate amount of flexibility.

If you aren't really interested in laboring over your image, but simply have a few basic flaws to correct, then you can also choose from the range of Beginner Photo Editors. These comprise of the most elemental features and focus on being simple to use. In fact, many of these editors even have a wizard to guide you through the process of editing, step-by-step. A majority of these editors are equipped with a comprehensive tutorial, and include many on-screen tips which you can refer to from time to time. The most popular of these editors are the Photoshop Elements Software and the Ulead PhotoImpact Editing Tool.

If you are eying the enviable features that come along with the more expensive softwares but are deterred by the imaginative price tags that adorn them, you can try any of the Budget Photo Editors which, not only let you use all of these features, but are also incredibly affordable. A large number of these softwares are for free and you can even find downloadable versions on the internet. However, the downside is that they are not as reliable as you may want them to be and you will also have to put up with annoying pop ups which try to coerce you into purchasing the retail version of the software.

Once you have selected the software you intend to work with, you can further accentuate the features you are provided with, by using Digital Imaging Software. These tools contain a plethora of features which are very useful for editing your digital photographs, but will often pass on the basic painting and drawing capabilities.

It is crucial that you first establish the amount of time you will be able to dedicate to your software once you've purchased it. Although a software that enjoys a commendable reputation like Adobe Photoshop may be alluring, it won't be any good if you can't afford to devote the time and efforts that are essential to learning the finer nuances of the software. But once you've made your choice, and made it well, you can be sure that your images will look a lot more scintillating than they ever have before!

As with any subject of interest, it is important to be familiar with and understand the terminology - and digital photography is certainly no exception. People that understand the meaning of common digital photography terms and abbreviations have the knowledge necessary to purchase digital cameras and understand the features they offer. Because many of the abbreviations and terms are unique to digital photography and digital cameras, it is imperative for hobbyists and professionals to understand their meaning. Here are some of the most common and important terms and abbreviations.

? Pixel ? A pixel is the tiniest part or smallest discrete component of any digitized picture or image and all photos actually start with a pixel. Digital photographs are comprised of thousands or even millions of pixels, which are the photo's building blocks.

? Megapixel ? One million pixels make up one megapixel. When photographers use the term or word megapixel, they are referring to a digital camera photo's maximum resolution in millions of pixels. In other words, cameras with a four-megapixel range take photographs that have a four million pixel maximum. This means quality to the consumer because better quality photos have higher megapixel counts. Buy a digital camera with the highest megapixel range you can afford, trying to keep it in the three or above megapixel range, especially for people wanting to make photo prints.

? Resolution ? This refers to the total amount of pixels in a digital photo, with the better quality, sharper pictures having a higher resolution.

? JPEG ? Formulated by the Joint Photographic Experts Group, a JPEG is a compressing image standard or compression method. JPEGs along with GIFs are two of the principal graphic formats found on the web. The lossy compression method used by JPEGs, which is a lossy file format, sacrifices a little of the original image data each time you save an image. The 24-bit color image stored by JPEGs, which lets you save innumerable colors, is well suited for images and photos with fine grades of color and tone.

? Aperture ? The opening that lets the light travel to the sensor inside the interior of the digital cam is the aperture. When you take a picture, inside the lens is a round, small opening that alters the diameter, which controls and measures the total light hitting the sensor in the digital camera. It is the shutter speed and aperture combined that control how much light reaches the camera's sensor. An aperture priority mode, found on some digital cameras, allows the photographer to adjust the aperture to suit their requirements.

? Focal Length ? Often overlooked in amateur photography, the term focal length refers to how much the camera lens is able to magnify a shot. Normally divided into two categories, the focal lengths are telephoto and wide-angle for narrow fields and spacious fields of view respectively.

? Memory ? In the digital camera, storage space capability that stores the pictures is the memory.

Knowing the common digital photography terms can help people understand cameras better so they can purchase one that meet their requirements. And, of course - before you purchase, test the digital camera out first!
