Lorem ipsum is not simply random text. It is however over 2000 years old.

Lorem ipsum is from Cicero's text "The purposes of Good and Evil". This passage was discovered by Richard McClintock.

Basically, 2000 years ago, a typesetter writing a book needed a way to show where the text would be on a page. He took latin typeset and scrambled the letters to form "non-sense" text to demonstrate the page's layout without the true text in place. This process has been in continued use since then.
