According to the investigation carried out by the LPG Competition Commission, a factor that came to its attention was that the customers of LPG in some cases know that they are paying high prices for the service, and yet they don't seem to see any other option other than paying more. This is partially because of the lack of information that customers have.
While there are many users of LPG who are otherwise satisfied with it except for the price factor, there are many who are not aware of other suppliers in the market. They don't see switching as an option because they are aware of the cost implications that it will have, and there are many who consider that there is no reward in switching.
According to the investigation by the LPG Competition Commission, among the customers who use LPG, there are almost half who do not work and are older. These people want to keep their costs low, and are not content with the prices. They cannot switch because of a lack of knowledge, and also because they consider the whole process an inconvenience for someone their age.
There were many areas, according to the investigation, where most people have been using the same supplier for many years mainly because they are the only supplier, and also because they don't have enough knowledge related to the other supplier options available.
The satisfaction of a large percentage of people is very low relative to their value of money, and they think that they are paying much higher than the service they are receiving demands. However, they are still using the service because there are some large supply firms that actually charge more.
Many suppliers increased their prices recently, and there were many people who complained to the suppliers about the price increase - and there were also many who took no action or reduced their consumption of LPG. When the price increased, most people did not think about comparing the prices with other suppliers because of the lack of knowledge, and there were only a small percentage of people who actually went through the process of comparing their increased prices with the prices that the other suppliers were offering.
There was a large percentage of people who had never compared the costs and benefits of their supplier with those that the other suppliers are offering. Some of these people don't even know that other suppliers exist, and there are also others who had never thought that there might be a significant difference between the prices and the benefits offered in return. The lack of assistance from the existing supplier while switching is also another prevalent factor.
Most people who did switch suppliers did it because of the increased prices and because of the high costs of the existing suppliers. There were also others who were dissatisfied with the quality of service offered in return for such a high price. Some customers who were aware of the prices of different suppliers did some negotiating, and obtained relatively lower prices.
