Keep your nails short as you grow them out. Short nails decrease the possibility of breaking and peeling. It's tempting to grow those nails out long, but let your nails grow and gain some strength before keeping them long.



Four months is the time it takes a nail to grow from the cuticle out to the nail tip. So give your nails at least four months to go from a bitten and nibbled stage to stronger healthier nails.

Avoid metal files when filing your nails. Use a fine grit emery board. Metal files can easily tear fragile nails that are just growing out. Dry nails and file only in one direction to avoid splits in your nails.

Shape your nails in an oval shape, no points for your nails. Keep the oval gradual allowing for a wide area at the base. Shaping your nails this way makes your nails less prone to breaking and splitting.

Prevent your nails from breaking and peeling by using a protective coat of nail polish. If you use colored polish, apply a clear base coat before the colored polish coat. The clear polish will protect your nails from staining.

You minimize chipping your nail polish by applying a clear topcoat. Apply a topcoat of nail strengthener to your nail tips to act as a protective shield.
