Here in Georgia, we are frequently asked, "What is Green Roofing?" In a nutshell, green can be generally described as reduce, reuse, and recycle.
To Reduce energy usage, for you. Every little kilojoule counts, and it all adds up. Reduce pollutants in the air, water, and buildings indoors, as well as air, water, and land outside the home. Reduce material wastage. The key here is to ensure that any raw material is recycled or reused for another purpose and is not wasted.
Recycle. Roofing metals are easy to recycle, and you can often get paid for them at a scrap center. Most any plastic materials can also be recycled, but you will normally have to deliver it to a recycle center in Georgia. For more guiding tips on roof selection in Atlanta

Reuse materials, such as old cedar shingles which can be shredded into mulch and used on hiking trails, and also on residential landscaping. Because cedar biodegrades, it doesn’t ever have to be put in a landfill. New recycling possibilities are being developed for used asphalt shingles. They can be ground up and used as filler in residential road way asphalt mix. Currently, this is a minimal use, and there are plenty of asphalt roofs being torn off and getting dumped in landfills. We prefer our clients to place their new earth friendly, Energy Star Cool Metal Roofing material straight on top of their asphalt shingles. Slate roofing can be taken off, milled fine, and used as landscaping gravel. If you remove a used metal roof, it can often be re-applied on sheds, or sometimes recycled in Georgia.
