MySpace is one of the better-known social networking websites today. It is a personal and a public site at the same time. MySpace users are given personal space online and it is also a place where they can connect to their social network. The concept of MySpace is all about providing a venue for people to create and customize their personal website through its various applications and features while allowing user interaction.

A MySpace account is actually a customized website of the user already. All MySpace users are given a profile that contains an e-mail inbox, an address book, and a place for personal photos, blogs and other fun features. These fun features are the applications a MySpace user adds to her account.

The basic elements of a MySpace profile are the following: Moods, Blurbs, Blogs, Multimedia, Comments, Profile Customization (HTML) and Music. Aside from its basic contents, MySpace has some features that give the users additional information and better access to other online information/programs without having to log off their account. The features of every MySpace account are: Bulletins, Groups, MySpace IM (Instant Messenger), MySpace TV, MySpace Mobile, MySpace News and MySpace Classifieds. The new features include: MySpace Sports, MySpace Horoscopes, MySpace Jobs, and MySpace Movies.

Aside from the contents and features, there are a lot different applications that can be added to make the user accounts more personal and exciting. Anyone who wants to edit their MySpace account does not need to have extensive knowledge in programming languages such as HTML, CSS or JavaScript. All the user has to do is to cut and paste programming codes available in different websites. MySpace has retained this trait and in has even encouraged these customizations.

In an ideal set-up, using any of the existing codes available should work well, but because we are in the real world where spammers and hackers exist, some caution in the copying of code is advisable. Sure, there are a number of trustworthy sites where you can copy and paste legitimate application codes, but there are just some out there that cause mischief. MySpace users should watch out for possible illegitimate programs and should stick with trustworthy websites for applications. This is also the reason why MySpace Developer Platform was introduced. It allows legitimate developers to develop their own applications that could run in MySpace and it can also generate income for them.

If an application or person is found to violate copyright, present a security risk, distributes pornography or engages in a commercial activity such as selling ads on MySpace using their application, it will definitely be blocked. MySpace is very clear about their Terms of Service and all types of MySpace Applications and MySpace Application Content should comply with this and the Application Guidelines.

This does not mean however that MySpace is limiting the amount of possible applications that their users can add to their account. In fact, the opportunities for better, more exciting applications to run on MySpace is increasing as developers are guided accordingly. Users can personalize their MySpace account as much as they want to and incorporate different applications that suit them best with the right kind of tweaking.
