Air conditioners come in many sizes having different cooling capacities. The price accordingly varies. Apart from the common window air conditioner there are also air split conditioners but the basic principles of operation are generally the same.

The air split conditioner is a refrigerator sans the insulation box. The evaporation mechanism of refrigerant (Freon) is used for the cooling purpose. Freon is a term that is `used for any of various nonflammable fluorocarbons uses as refrigerants and as propellants for aerosols.`

The cool Freon gas is compressed by the compressor and it becomes hot. The heated gas passes through a number of coils and condenses to become liquid. This air handler allows air to be blown through the coils and channels the air through the building via ducts. The hot side is referred to as the condensing unit and is kept outside the building. The unit looks like a long cylinder. There is a fan inside the coil to propel the air along the coil. In this task a compressor that is resistant to weather and some control mechanisms are also used.

The name is given because the hot and cold sides have been split apart enabling for larger capacity. Bigger sized coils and compressors can now be accommodated.
