Murcia City, Spain (one of the best Towns anywhere!) is a City of many faces and has a rich mix of old architecture, cosmopolitan shops and enough variety of places to stay, restaurants and pubs to suit just about anyone! Booking a room is maybe quite a bit easier than in most large cities and great value can be had. Whatever your mood (now and again I just need a simple meal, other times I'm ready to enjoy a good drink followed by some late night tapas) Murcia can accommodate your fancy..
The Casino (built in 1847), in Traper'a, possesses a magnificent Arab patio, a rococo ballroom and lots of other beautifully laid out halls and rooms with beautiful ornate plaster work. Really it's more of a exclusive Gentlemen's Retreat than what you'd think of as a casino today but go there if you can, it's Gorgeous
The Cathedral is the centrepiece of the City in truth. It was built from the 14th to the 18th centuries and really epitomises the mixture of building of those times. There are four unusual features of this cathedral of appeal to the enthusiast: The detailed face of the ?Puerta del Perd'n?; The Renaissance ?Junterones? chapel; The cathedral tower which is 96 metres tall and contains 25 bells: Also you must include the Diocesan Museum.
Other architecturally fascinating points of interest you mustn't miss are the City Hall (Ayuntamiento) and the Teatro Romea, some of whose ornate facades come from the 14th century. Makes sure you go to see the region's fantastic artistic history in plenty of exhibition halls, art galleries and museums that all are a vital part of the towns lively intellectural life: Salzillo Museum (what a sculptor this chap was!); The Archaeological Museum; The Bullfighting Museum (some exhibits for the strong stomach...); The Ram'n Gaya Museum (dedicated to this local artist in 1990, he was 82 then; The Museum of Fine Arts.. There are plenty of exhibits from other artists also. Ram'n was strongly influenced by Rembrandt - to show you an idea of the style..; The Palacio Almud? Art Centre; and so on.. If style, culture and architecture are your thing then you'll have a wonderful time in Murcia County.
One unusual feature here to remind us of the trading history of Murcia is some of the streets are called after the wares that were sold on them, for example Traperia (cloth), Plateria (silver).
Accomodations in Murcia cover the whole spectrum of standards to suit all people from a little bed and breakfast hotel to 5 Star opulence and restaurants proliferate in the many little squares to suit all wallets and tastes. If simply a good night out and a drink is what you're after there are plenty of nice and some not so cool bars to have some drinks in.
Shopping is a particular occupation for my Wife I'm afraid more than myself. (I'm not alone here I bet..) She tells me that she doesn't have to go out of town to buy shoes so that tells me the shopping in Murcia must be pretty comprehensive!! No, seriously, there are plenty of up to date shops and anything you could need is available here. There are some really cool trendy shops and the staff are very nice though in some it helps if you had a tiny bit of Spanish.. Overall, Murcia is a fantastic place to visit or live near which is what I do..
