The airline industry and the general flight job market are filled with positions that require a very specific skill set. Pilots need to have years of experience in order to properly control the flight of a plane. Mechanics need to be well versed on the inner workings of an airplane engine in order to understand problems that may come up. Air traffic controllers must be familiar with radar and other navigation equipment in order to fulfil their lofty job responsibilities. In all, the airline industry requires compartmentalized individuals each working toward the goal of safe flight.
However, these professionals rely on generalists in order to get their job done. This may not make much sense but the flight operations assistant needs to be familiar with the entire airport in order to complete their job. Like operation assistants in other fields, a flight operations assistant works with flight and airport staff in order to coordinate technical support and communications on a regular basis. An operations assistant typically learns about the airport by working in various departments before jumping to such a general position. In this way, they can learn all of the nuances that go into creating the daily hustle and bustle of the airport.
A professional that chooses to pursue a career as a flight operations assistant needs to understand the stresses of the job. These professionals typically work long hours which require a high level of concentration and upper level thinking in order to solve natural and manmade problems. The weather may turn bad, requiring a flight operations assistant to speak with runway maintenance workers to clear it off to keep flights landing on time. There may be mechanical problems caused by careless maintenance, which requires a flight operations assistant to prepare a ground crew for an incoming flight.
These stresses make it crucial that a flight operations assistant have the skills and temperament to do the job day in and day out. These professionals need to have an even keel and be level headed even in the most stressful situations. Flight operations requires an exceptional level of organization, as there are hundreds of daily tasks that need to be coordinated to make the airport run efficiently. As well, a flight operations assistant needs to know how to communicate with individual professionals and understand the problems they encounter in fulfilling their job responsibilities. A young professional who exhibits these skills will succeed in flight operations.
