There are a dozen great reasons to buy a truck tonneau, but topping the list these days is the fact that retractable tonneau covers save gas. Period. After exhaustive testing in state-of-the-art wind tunnels, the verdict is that tonne can improve fuel economy by between six and nine percent, depending on the type of tonno and on driving conditions. Even though the price of gas has fallen a bit over the past few weeks, there's little doubt that the fuel costs will continue to take a huge bite out of the average person's budget.

Great Reasons to Buy a Tonne

So, if the number one reason to buy a retractable tonneau cover is to save fuel, what are some of the other reasons? First, it's incredibly practical. Unlike other types of covers for truck beds, you don't have to take a retractable tonno on and off. You can simply roll it up when you need access to your truck bed, and then roll it back down when you're done. Not only can you keep the contents of your truck bed out of sight, but you can also help protect them from the elements. Although truck bed covers aren't watertight, they usually keep most snow and rain away from your belongings. With a cover, you don't have to worry about items blowing out of your truck bed as you drive down the road. Finally, covers give you the flexibility you need, in that you can easily take them on and off.

It's All About Options

When it comes to selecting a retractable tonneau cover, you have a number of options, since covers come with a variety of features and are at several price points. The most basic roll top covers often have a contoured, raised design that allows for a smaller canister to maximize the space you have for cargo. They should also be constructed of high-tensile aluminum and automotive grade vinyl, and should come equipped with a handle and weather-sealed lock.

The next model up is called a JackRabbit, and has a design that is flush with the truck for a low profile and sleek appearance. Like the basic roll top, the JackRabbit is constructed of automotive grade vinyl and high-tensile aluminum. Best of all, you can install it without using a drill, which translates into more weather resistance and security.

Going further up the line, the JackRabbit Full Metal features solid aluminum panels that are interlocked and sealed for maximum strength. Its trademark spring system allows you to close the cover with very little effort, while the operating system allows the cover to be latched every 12 inches. This gives you an incredible amount of flexibility when hauling loads of different shapes and sizes.

The top of the line model is called the BedLocker, so called because you can open and close the cover with a remote control. Similar to the Full Metal, the BedLocker can be closed in any position, so you have the ultimate flexibility in hauling.
