The plastic worm is perhaps the most commonly used bait, especially in the southern United States. It is not my first choice or even one of my top three choices but many have success using it. It is best fished very slow on the bottom of the lake and is best when the fish are in their in active phase.
Perhaps the most famous use of this bait is when you take the point of the hook and hook it through both the top and midsection of the worm, burying it inside the plastic. This is called a "Texas Rig" and it makes the worm weedless which allows you to fish it in even the heaviest of cover that might hold Largemouth Bass.
When fishing for actively feeding Largemouth Bass it is often a good idea to change from a plastic worm to a crankbait. Crankbait are lure made of wood or plastic that closelyresemble a small fish in terms of color and size.
They have a plastic lip near where the line is tied to them. The size and design of this lip determines how deep the bait will run when retrieved. Some are designed to be retrieved in the upper three feet of water while other bounce the bottom in water as deep as fifteen feet. All of them are designed to be retrieved rapidly, unlike the plastic worm which is retrieved slowly.
The spinner bait is in my opinion the most versatile and absolute best single bass bait. It is a combination of a spinner and jig. This lure is semi weedless and can be brought through many forms of weed and cover. It is so successful you will often catch fish as soon as the lure hits the water and begins its descent. It is a lure that will work for both active and inactive fish, you merely need to vary the retrieval method and change your approach.
The jig and pig is another artificial lure designed to catch bass that are inactive and in deep water. This lure consists of a jig head with a skirt made of hair or plastic strips. Attached to the hook is a pork rind, hence the name "jig and pig". It is fished slowly in deeper water for inactive fish.
The buzz bait is shaped much like a spinnerbait with less versatility. It is used when sound attractant is important. As name same suggests this lure creates a buzzing noise as it is swiftly retrieved along the surface of the water for actively feeding bass.
Top water plugs have been a staple of the bass fishing industry for years. They are best fished with at night when the water is quite calm. They are designed to resemble a frog or other surface swimming creature. It is perhaps the most thrilling way to catch a bass as you will often see the fish stalking your bait seconds before he actually takes it.

Understanding Bass and Your Bait!
Bass can be found in lakes, rivers, and streams. During the winter Bass are found in the deeper regions of the water. While the fish will still feed during this period, the level of activity and the rate of metabolism are greatly reduced. It will take several days to digest any meal. As the water warms up in the spring there activity will increase. When the water temperature reaches sixty five degrees the bass begin to move out of the deeper waters toward the shallow regions where spawning will occur. Spawning usually occurs where the water is three to five feet deep and where the bottom is composed of clay, gravel or hard-packed sand and covered with a thin layer of soft mud. Early in the spawning season you should fish in areas near deep water where the larger fish will be gathering prior to moving into the spawning areas.
After the spawning cycle is complete the adult bass will once again return to the deeper waters to be found in their typical haunts. When it comes to fishing for bass the presentation of your bait or lure is the key to success. The bottom line is that you want your offering (whether live or artificial) to appear as natural as possible. One of the most effective ways to catch bass is by using live bait. The best way to have your live bait appear as natural as possible is to use gang hooks, which allow live bait (especially live worms) to be presented in a natural manner. Crayfish, worms, and minnows are good live baits. Gang hooks once again are great for using with crayfish.
Now for artificial baits. The same principles hold true. Whatever bait you may be using, it needs to look as natural as possible. Stay away from unnatural and strange colors that don't look at all like the way the bait appears in nature. This is true for any artificial lure that's employed. If you're using a bait fish imitation, it needs to look like the bait fish does in nature. The bottom line is that when you are fishing for bass, presentation is absolutely a key to success. Make sure that your offerings are as natural as possible. The more lifelike that your offering appears to the bass the more bites you will get!
An important key to bass fishing is what can be referred to as, 'predictable behavior' of the fish. By understanding how the bass lives in nature, you will increase your chances of success. Searching for cover in rocky areas, stumps, and grasses all seem to be part of The Bass feeding habits. Taking advantage and considering this with every cast will benefit you greatly. Other factors like water conditions and clarity, the time of day you are fishing, the effects of sunlight, water displacement and vibration sensing, noise sensitivity, all add to fish survival skills. By paying close attention to these factors you will increase your odds of hooking that next trophy bass. There is no silver bullet, no quick-fish method that can guarantee you bites and more bass all the time. It takes preparation, hard work and commitment, persistence and rigor from the angler. Some days will be predictably better than others. No matter what the conditions, process and outcome, on the day, put it all down to experience and lessons learned!
