Spend some time in a shop just talking to people and watching before you decide to let them create your new tattoo. If you are not comfortable with their work or the atmosphere, then move along.

A good tattoo shop will always have a tattoo flash or books of their work available. Photographers and other artists are required to keep portfolios and show clients their previous work.

The artists who work in such shops should be held to the same standard. In addition to looking through their portfolio of tattoos, each body art artist should display the paperwork identifying their state certification.

Any business that is properly certified will proudly have all of their paperwork on display. If you wander into a tattoo shop and there is no evidence of any paperwork regarding training or cleanliness inspections, then they probably don't have any.

Seriously reconsider using a tattoo shop that does not have these documents. The reality of Hepatitis is too big of risk to take.

Find a place where you are comfortable. A good skin design shop realizes that its clients may be a little nervous, especially if it is your first. If a body art artist tries to intimidate you or to coerce you into something that you are not comfortable with, keep shopping around.

Plenty of great tattoo shops believe in customer satisfaction. Remember, your body art is permanent, so take the time to make sure that you are really getting what you want.

In reputable tattoo shops, an artist will tell you if they don't feel comfortable with your design. This is the ultimate display of integrity.

If a skin design artist feels the body art that you want is above his or her skill level and is willing to turn down the job, then trust them. Ask them for recommendations. If they can't do it, chances are good that they know someone who can.

The best way to find good tattoo shops is by word of mouth recommendations. Check internet forums, go to trade shows and ask your friends. Find out where people are going to get great body art service.

Remember, anybody with a machine can buy advertising space and talk about how good they are. You want to talk to their customers and find out for yourself.

In the same way, if you do find a great skin design shop, spread the word. I'm sure that the artist will appreciate the acknowledgement and the business that you bring his or her way.
