The Internet is a great education tool. Having information about practically every subject that one can think of the Internet is a great place to quickly fetch information and educate oneself. The Internet is good for both brief readings and in depth education. For most people today if they need to find information about something they do not know much about they start by firing up their browser and loading up their favorite search engine. The next step is to type a few keywords and then look at the results one of which is likely to include some information about that subject. After reading a bit about the unknown subject one can search for more in depth information using what was just learned and thus in an iterative process get deeper and deeper and gain more and more understanding of that subject.

Just imagine the hassle just ten years ago if you needed to find information about something that you did not know. The first choice would be to open an encyclopedia if you had one. If you did not have one you might be forced to walk to the local library to use one. But encyclopedias no matter how big and extensive can not cover a practically infinite number of subjects and if it did not include the subject you were looking for then you were out of luck. Encyclopedias are also hard to search. Your only option was to look for the subject in an alphabetic order or to use the short index to find some relevant keywords. The other problem with encyclopedias is that they are dated by nature. From the time the information is gathered to the encyclopedia being printed and then put on your shelf it could be years or more. So if you were searching for information about subjects that change a lot or are just new you were also out of luck.

The other option to find information about new stuff was to try to ask people around you that might know. Obviously this process is time consuming and might also be annoying to those other people. It is also very limited in its ability to provide information as the number of people you know is relatively small and the number of subjects they are expert in is also small and probably also in the same field like your knowledge.

So the Internet has changed the way we find information and educate ourselves about new matters. It did come with one big drawback though. As opposed to encyclopedias that are cited and checked over and over before printed the Internet includes information that can be put there by anyone. The result is that a lot of the information on the Internet might be biases or just plain wrong. Most users when finding a web site dealing with something assume that content is right. It is better actually to assume the opposite and to take advantage of the ease of information search on the Internet. To make sure look for the subject in different sites and compare and also look at the reputation of the web site in order to assess how true the information is.
