Nearly forty years ago, Thurman and Hisako Roberts started the Salt Lick restaurant in the heart of Driftwood. The original structure of the restaurant was built by the couple using their own hands and the stones quarried from their ranch. The famous BBQ recipes were all from their family legacy which has been passed down from generation to generation.
The Driftwood is such a small town in the past that the highest population ever recorded only reached a hundred people. Through the years, the population fluctuated until it only has 21 residents in 1990, that's nearly twenty years ago. But this sad number slowly began to increase, thanks to the popularity of the Salt Lick restaurant. There is no certain population count nowadays but rest assured it is higher than a hundred people.
The quiet town of Driftwood may be too quiet for some but it sure is home to many others. It is only a short 30 minute drive to Austin, the Capital of Texas, and less than an hour to San Antonio. People yearning for a friendly atmosphere, acreage home sites, and Texas Hill Country surroundings began relocating here. The Salt Lick restaurant has been proven to be the main attraction of the small town and sometimes BBQ lovers relocate their home sweet home in Driftwood.
Salt Lick restaurant's loyal customer base say that the driving experience while going to Driftwood is a rewarding one because they get to feel the old country feeling of the ancient Texas, lesser houses and buildings. FM 1826 (aka Ben McCulloch), the only road to/from the Salt Lick, offers beautiful rolling hills and massive Live Oaks Trees. They discover new ways of reconnecting themselves with nature as they pass by hillsides and small creeks. The peaceful and relaxing note of Driftwood as well as the few friendly faces makes everyone want to stay longer.
There was no actual recording of how the town was named Driftwood. Some people say that Driftwood, Texas is just one of the few places which prefer to read about various events in other cities rather than having the events in their town. A lot of the historical old buildings are still around nowadays, most of them are over two centuries old.
The small Driftwood community never ceases to gather every once in awhile to familiarize themselves with their neighbors, both new and old. They have established the Driftwood Community Improvement Club to create connections, relationships, friendships, and most importantly, a strong and stable community living in harmony.
The Driftwood Community Improvement Club has renewed the face of the old school building to make way for the Driftwood Community Center. The Driftwood Community Center is the wonderful setting for the monthly potluck dinner gatherings, wedding receptions, family reunions, Heritage Day celebrations, and other community gatherings. They have even built the new sports facility behind the building for everyone to indulge in sports such as tennis and basketball.
The small town of Driftwood is slowly growing each year and we'd like you to come and join us. This is the perfect town for people who wanted a quiet life filled with never-ending Southern Hospitality.

Being An Army Officer I know to me, the idea of not using either my bait bag or retractors while fishing isnt even an option any more. They are both as much a part of my fishing gear as my rod and reel are.
