My father's birthday was quickly approaching and none of us had a clue what to get him. He never tells us exactly what he wants. After wandering around, I had no idea what to do for him, neither did my sister or my brother. We found out about a golf outing that he could actually play with old professionals.
As soon as we found out details, we knew it was the perfect gift. My father loves golf; he plays every day! If he's not playing, he's watching it on television. He says he's "breaking in" his driver, but we know better. I think he's addicted! So we signed him up for the tournament, and he was completely surprised. He had no idea, and was thrilled!
The golf tournament finally comes around, and my father and his friends all play together. It lasts all day, along with a silent auction and dinner included. He says the dinner was incredible; he thanked us over and over again, proclaiming the food was really great, at the silent auction he put in his bid for something he longed for.
My mother ate her $25 worth of desserts throughout the evening. She said the food wasn't as tempting as everything on the dessert table. She went along over to the auction table carrying what looked like three slices of cake, maybe even one slice of cheesecake.
My father placed a bid on quite a few things. He placed a bid on an autographed picture of an athlete. He placed a bid on a couple of shirts, and some other stuff. He then saw a weed whacker that he's been wanting for the property in the south, so he placed a bid. He was more excited than I've ever seen him when his bid remained the highest.
My mother does the same as my father, except she looks at the gift baskets. From what she said, the auction had so many different gift baskets to choose from. She was looking for a special gift to give my father, for his upcoming birthday and for Christmas. She looked at wine gift baskets and found a basket full of assorted meats and wines. She bid on several of them, so that she could give them to family relatives during the Christmas holidays. I think it was a good strategy for the value.
The actual auction comes around and the auctioneer steps to award the prizes to the highest bidders during the silent auction, and to also begin the regular auction. My mother wins her prize that she had bid on earlier. Then once the silent auction distribution is finished, the real auction begins. The first thing that's auctioned off is the weed whacker! My father bid on it, but that was only to create a starting bid. He didn't bid any higher for the weed whacker and the auctioneer ended up bidding on it and winning it himself. My father was bummed; he had high hopes to win that thing. Although, he had a fun day with his friends and that's all that mattered in the end.
