Do you remember all the ads for airtight bags? In your fight to prevent water damage from happening, these are a godsend. You remove all the air out of the bag and just put them up. They will keep all air or water out of the things that you put into these bags, but always make sure that if you put your winter or summer clothes in these that they are dry and not warm, like they were just taken out of the dryer.

Another way to prevent water damage is to not leave wet items such as bathing suits, towels, wash rags or anything else laying around if it is wet. If something gets spilled on your carpet or floors, try to clean it up right away if at all possible. In some cases, you will not have a choice but to leave this water on the floor or carpet because of a flood caused by a natural disaster, such as a hurricane, tropical storm, or a tidal wave. In some cases, you might have to leave for some reason or another.

If you build a house in an area that might have a history of flooding, you can either resell this land and build somewhere else or do precautions that will help you keep this home from water damage. You might want to start by putting this house above ground and installing air vents when you go to enclose the area underneath your floors. This may help to keep the ground dryer.

You will want to do yearly checks on your water lines and all other vents that are installed under your floors. If these water lines were to break or creak, you might not even know until the damage from the water is done. If there is a break you can have it fixed almost right away, but make sure that you have installed shut off valves on all lines. If the problem is just a crack, you might not even know that it is there until you get your water bill and wonder why it's so high.

If you have an older home you will want to check around your foundation and of course your window because these are two places that water love to sit. If you don't do periodic checks on these places, they will start to show signs of water damage real fast.
