Before you next head out to soak up the sun’s rays try to remember these points.
A suntan is not a sign of good health. It’s actually a sign that your skin has been damaged by the sun (ultraviolet radiation). When your skin is damaged by these rays melanin (the chemical responsible for skin colour) comes to the surface for protection against anymore harmful rays. Your skin becomes darker as more and more melanin is required for protection to help with the damage already caused.
The most dangerous type of skin cancer is the malignant melanoma, while not as common as other forms it can be fatal. At most risk are those with fair hair and skin, freckles, those who have difficulty tanning and tend to burn easily in the sun, and those with a family history. Though the good news is that if found early often melanomas can be easily and successfully treated.
Of course skin cancer is not the only problem caused by the sun. It can also cause premature ageing, wrinkles, dark spots (sometimes called age or liver spots) and rough or scaly patches of skin. It can also cause cataracts and other eye problems.
Another major point to remember is that ultraviolet radiation cannot be felt on your skin, so just because you don’t feel yourself burning doesn’t mean that you’re not. Ultraviolet radiation can damage your skin just as easily on an overcast day as what it can when the sky is clear.
Next time you plan on spending any amount of time outside, just remember to take a few precautionary steps. Not only should you use sunscreen, you should also keep yourself covered when possible and always wear a hat. As an often repeated commercial in Australia states: Slip, Slop and Slap – slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat. Try not to be in direct sunlight in the middle of the day as this is when the ultraviolet index is very high: if it’s necessary remember to Slip, Slop and Slap before going outside and to reapply if you’ve been swimming, have sweated a lot or towel dried your skin etc.
By keeping those few points in mind, along with finding shade when possible and wearing sunglasses, we should all be able to reap the benefits the sun can provide and not worry about the long term negative effects it might have.
What Made The Sun
While I'm sure you're aware of the land of the free, it's a pretty common phrase, have you ever heard of the land of the sun? Well, you may not have, but then again you probably have at some point. The Costa del Sol, whose name means "Coast of the sun", has recently been becoming rather well known as an excellent destination, both for holidays and retirement.
If you are planning on buying a holiday home, or just taking a vacation, the sun-lit shores of Spain is the perfect location for you. Usually, when looking to buy a holiday property, there is some negative factor to be considered. Maybe the locals are unfriendly, or the area is the frequent target of earthquakes or hurricanes. Not the sunny shores of Spain though.
There, any holiday activity you can imagine is possible. If you really wish to, you can spend all your time lounging on the beach, and if you visit in the winter you might even have it to yourself. Don't worry, though, it never gets really cold, so there's no need to pack your snowshoes. Unless, of course, you choose to travel to one of the nearby mountains, where every winter sport imaginable is available.
Of course, there is a downside to this. After all, nothing is perfect. The big problem with Spain, is that once there, you might never want to go back... your old life seeming drab and boring by comparison. The capital of Costa del Sol is one of the worlds largest centers of art and culture, while the city of Marbella holds a huge array of entertainment venues such as theatres.
In addition to the more common holiday options, there are also a variety of more unusual options. the most obvious being the ever popular mountains, of course, where you can ski in the winter, or hang glide and mountain bike in the summer. Or even just go on a long hike through the verdant forests. Whatever you desire, its your holiday!
As you head down towards the sea, there are more options you can take. You could go on a safari, or visit a zoo, or just learn to ride a horse. Plus, there's Tivoli world. One of Spain's largest amusement parks, your inner child will never forgive you if you miss it. If a more sedentary pursuit is your thing, you can relax at one of the huge number of golf courses. The Costa del sol is host to some of the best golf courses in the world, with something guaranteed suitable for anyone.
Then down by the sea there is every watersport imaginable, from water-skiing to scuba diving to swimming with dolphins, although I'm not sure that qualifies as a sport! Plus, from the shores of Costa del Sol, you can see some incredible scenery. The nearby mountains fill the horizon, while across the water the shores Africa are visible.
If you take only one holiday in your life, and want to be assured it will be a good one, then Spain is for you. Spain, and the glorious Costa del Sol, which can now be reached via a single flight from any major city. Property there is selling fast, so now is the time to buy- either for a holiday home, or as an investment, for the price is sure to rise.
