Allow me to tell you a story of a friend named Gary. Gary wasn't an overachiever, he wasn't at the top of his class, and he spend a lot of time in sports instead of on his homework, but still found time to usually complete it all. Gary was just an average high school senior. He realizes that he needs to start and should have started applying for college admissions some time ago, but he just can't decide on which university or college would help him achieve his goals. Knowing how helpful the internet is, he begins his college search over the web.
After some thinking on what kind of career he wants to pursue, he decides that he will just worry about getting his associates degree and then decide on a career. He is prejudice towards a number of suburban areas throughout the nation and locates a few prestigious colleges in each of them. He proceeds to go to each of the website's college admissions pages and prints off application after application. He has thirteen colleges just to be safe, since he is after all, just average. He begins to fill one out. He gets all his information in all the blanks, writes a check for the admissions fees and seals it up in an envelope.
He notices that the first college admissions application is very similar to the rest. He doesn't like tedious work but feels that if wants to go to college, he just has to bite the bullet and do what they ask. While filling out the second application he falls asleep. His dreams are full of college admission nightmares as he receives letter after letter telling him his application was rejected, partly because of his bad handwriting when filling out the application. He wakes up exhausted after that nightmare and decides to try something else.
He assumes that there is some kind of program that would make the process easier. He goes back to searching on the net.
He returns to the websites and realizes that he can just type in all of his personal info right on the site. He finds that this way is not easier. His clicking skills aren't all they are cracked up to be. He wishes there was just one site where he could submit all of his information once, and send that to all of the college admissions officers around the nation.
He decides to do a search on Google. He puts in college admissions and and other similar words. He can't seem to find anything that pleases him. He looks at many different webpages but nothing fits his need. To be less general he types in Dartmouth College Admissions and Yale Admissions since his friends both applied there. Nothing seems to work for him. Something that will solve his problem of having to fill out multiple applications for all the schools he is applying for. A resource to help him apply online not for just one college, but to apply for colleges at once and for scholarships too, that is what he is looking for.
"How can I find that?" he thinks. "What search would get me something like that?"
He is about to throw in the towel. While he knows just what he needs, locating it has become a chore. He has been spending many hours trying to find any information and is completely discouraged and distraught. he decides college isn't really even worth it. Relying only on the two applications he filled out earlier by hand, Gary gives up on the entire online application process. He sends in his two applications and hopes for the best. He is confident that at least one of those places will accept him, if not for his grades, then for his awesome personality that he hopes shows through the way he filled out the application.
Two weeks go by and he has not heard from either college. A month. Two months. He is graduating tomorrow and that day gets the letters he has been waiting for. He can not wait to find out which one he got into. He opens the letter from a state university first and reads that they regret to inform him that with his information, he has not been accepted. He shrugs it off and opens the one from his 1st choice in colleges. He is shocked to read that he has not been accepted to this one either.
That night he graduates. His mom kicks him out of the house. He is forced to get a job at McDrivein's, where he spends the next ten years. If only he could have found something that would have gotten his name out to more colleges so he could have gotten an education.
