Cost Of Living In New Jersey

    View:
Situated on the East Coast with close proximity to New York City and Philadelphia, New Jersey geographically rests in an ideal commercial crossroads location. As a result, the economy is very strong and diverse. For example, rather than capitalizing on one industry like many other states, New Jersey is home to printing, electronic, health care, retail, service, food processing, fishing, shipping, and agricultural industries. The state economy produces more than $400 billion every year. The average per capita income is also well above the national average.

Unfortunately, the cost of living in New Jersey probably requires a good portion of those larger salaries. For example, New Jersey carries one of the heaviest tax burdens of any state in the nation. NJ real estate is also very expensive since the average price from a single family home is $400,000 or more; a figure that is double the national average. In some areas, like Morris or Bergen, $800,000 is more of the median home price.

Part of the reason why real estate is so expensive is because of the scarceness of land. Three hundred years of settling and development coupled with an effort to preserve the state's natural beauty leave very little room for new growth. In addition to limiting development land, the untouched reserves also add to the state's appeal though which makes and the real estate value climb even higher.

If you are looking for the most "affordable" part of New Jersey, the southern region of the state, which is also known as the Pine Barrens, is one of the least expensive and least populated areas. The northwest region probably isn't far behind the Pine Barrens because of its mountainous and wooded terrain. A lot of people are drawn to the metropolitan areas of New York City and Philadelphia or the coastal communities along the eastern shore though. If you work in one of the larger cities, affordable housing will probably be hard to come by.

In spite of the high cost of living, New Jersey is a beautiful and industrious place to settle down. It also boasts one of the strongest education systems in the country. That's why New Jersey students consistently earn the highest average scores on Advanced Placement tests in the nation.
Cost Of Living In New Jersey
The reason for this, of course, stems from the fact that a lot of people commute from New Jersey to work in the big city. While some apartments in the Big Apple are going for seven figure sums, the cost of living remains reasonable and thus makes the commute into the city for higher wages worth the effort.

Although, Manhattanites pay for expensive apartments, citizens of New Jersey should not be envious. New Jersey itself has many things to offer that rival New York.

Here are just a few of the reasons why New Jersey is one of the greatest places to live and an exciting place in its own right.

When you think of New Jersey, I hope that Atlantic City comes to mind. While it may seem like the casinos have been a part of the city forever, the truth is that legislation paving the way for the casinos was not approved until 1976. The hope was to revitalize the local economy because the manufacturing base that had supported the area no longer existed.

Fast forward thirty years and Atlantic City is filled with casinos. A major casino in Atlantic City is the Trump Taj Mahal Casino. This casino draws in New Yorkers on every single day. Atlantic city is known as place where people come to play and have a gambling good time.

You can also walk along the boardwalk in Atlantic City. Tourists go to this boardwalk every year. It has amusement attractions, casinos, and great restaurants.

The beach borders the boardwalk for six miles and is a fun spot for the hot summer days. Many New Yorkers spend time at this beach for fun. Atlantic City also has the Miss America Pageant that is a big deal in the state of New Jersey and the country.

New York is the home to several institutions of higher education including Columbia University. However, New Jersey also has level universities also. Highly regarded Princeton University calls New Jersey home sweet home. Princeton, along with other great colleges and universities, is the main stop for some of the brightest students the world has to offer.

While New Jersey is perceived to be in the backdrop of the great city of Manhattan, it is still a wonder in its own right. Many New Jersey citizens commute to New York City every day for work. While this commute is common, it is important remember that New Jersey is a wonderful, worthy place to live and can rival New York in more ways then one.
