Sacramento, the capital city of California, nestled in a serene valley filled with leafy canopies, is a cosmopolitan junction with interesting sights, monuments, restaurants and burgeoning nightlife. With a pleasant weather throughout the year and a virtual cornucopia of art, Sacramento has evolved to become a tourists paradise. A plethora of luxurious villas has made it a center of attraction for the rich and affluent. Often mistaken to be a sleepy town, it has a lot to offer its visitors, as it has an extensive range of historic and educational attractions, which can entertain people from all walks of life. Its museums and historical parks make it one of the most interesting holiday spots. Some of the historical sites and monuments are as follows:
Sacramento Historic City Cemetery: Ornamented with statues, markers and lush gardens, the Sacramento Historic City Cemetery is the resting place of many remarkable citizens of California. It is an outdoor museum, which has a record of history of California, from the Gold Rush era till date. Established in 1849, this historic site demonstrates the diversity of history and culture of California.
Captain John Sutter constructed it with a donation of ten acres. It has been designed according to the Victorian Garden style that was popular throughout the mid and late 1800s. Being the oldest cemetery of Sacramento, you can find the burial sites of the mayors of Sacramento and the governors of California, memorials to civil war veterans, volunteer firemen, and the victims of the 1850 cholera epidemic inside its premises. It has a park-like setting for exploring the history of the area. Old City Cemetery Committee docents offer free guided walking tours of the historic cemetery to its visitors.
California State Military Museum: Located at 1119 Second Street in the Old Sacramento State Historical Park, California State Military Museum is the official military museum as well as the historical research center of the State of California. Its a walking distance from the State Capital, the California State Railroad Museum and a number of other museums, parks and tourist attractions. Arnold Schwarznegger signed legislation on 13 July 2004 that amended the Government Code, which made it the official military museum of the state.
Governor's Mansion State Historic Park: This museum once housed governors of California for more than 60 years. Being fully restored according to Second Empire-Italianate architecture, the mansion features personal items and furnishings left by the various families that occupied it, for example Governor Pardees Steinway piano, the plum colored velvet sofa and chairs that were bought by Mrs. Hiram Johnson, the hand-tied Persian carpets left behind by Mrs. Earl Warren, to name a few.
California Peace Officers' Memorial: This memorial was built by a small group of peace officers who felt the need to create a remembrance for their fallen comrades. This dream was realized when Governor Jerry Brown signed the SCR94. These officers then went to work, raising funds and devising ideas for the memorial. The ideas took the form of a memorial case, the leather bound book containing the names of the people in whose memory it was made, and two hand crafted swords symbolizing the Spartan warrior and the peace-keeper. Every year, during the week of May 15, groups of people gather to honor the memory of a member of their family. Since 1977, the California Peace Officers Memorial ceremonies have been conducted to honor the officers fallen in the line-of-duty the preceding year.
Besides all these wonderful sites and monuments, Sacramento wine tours also attract a lot of people. Historic Sites And Monuments
The Choirokoitia is a Neolithic Settlement site, 32 km from Larnaka town. It has been on the official list of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site since 1998 and is preserved much better than other sites from around this period. Though the site has been reconstructed, the authenticity of the place has been religiously maintained using the same traditional materials and methods of that period. Even the plant life at this site is representative of that bygone era.
The archaeological site of Kourion, 19 km west of Lemesos offers the spectacular sight of the restored Greco-Roman Theater that was originally constructed in the 2nd century BC and used for theatrical and musical performances. Visitors can marvel at the stunning 5th century mosaic floors in the House of the Gladiators and the House of Achilles. The Nymphaeum, an elegant Roman structure dedicated to the water nymphs as well as the early Christian Basicilica are no less impressive.
The architectural remains of the Kition, an ancient city-kingdom date back to the 13th century BC. The Mycenaean Greeks rebuilt it sometime in 1200BC and excavations have revealed a complex of five temples and walls constructed out of large stone blocks.
A visit to Pafos reveals impressive underground tombs spread over an extensive area which dates back to the 4th century BC. Carved from solid rock, some of these tombs are decorated using Doric pillars. Though it was the burial place of high officials and not really kings, the names reflect the magnificence of the tombs.
Episkopi, 3 km west of Kourion, houses the sanctuary of Apollo Ylatis, God of the Woodland and protector of Kourion city. Restorations have been done on the temple's southwest side and excavations have revealed important structures of this sanctuary including the palaistra, the pilgrim halls, a holy precinct and the bath complex.
The Pafos Mediaeval fort was originally a Byzantine fort constructed to offer protection to the harbor. In the 13th century it was reconstructed by the Lusignans and later after being dismantled in 1570 by the Venetians, it was re-rebuilt in the 16th century by the Ottomans.
Palaipafos, Old Pafos, one of the ancient Greek world's most important pilgrimage centers is home to the renowned sanctuary of Aphrodite. The museum is housed in the Lusignan Manor and contains numerous fascinating discoveries from the area. The ancient remains date back to the12th century BC.
