People love to look at quality cutlery place settings and they enjoy purchasing these items as well. These pieces are often showcased in department stores and of course shoppers are dazzled and buy them. The idea is to recreate the same effect at home. This often does not happen; the pieces are relegated to the chests and drawers at home.
Today we have a society that is built around speed and quickness. Setting proper tables with china and cutlery takes time and for this reason it has fallen by the wayside. There is one other reason and this is that many do not know how to set proper tables. The cutlery arrangement confuses and intimidates them, so it is much easier not to use all of the pieces, just what is most needed.
When you sit down at the dining table with your family and friends, this is a special time of day that you are spending together. The main purpose is to share food and conversation and enjoy each other's company. If you set a proper table and use your cutlery and dinnerware you are also letting people know that you think enough of them to go to this extra bit of trouble for them. It also lets you practice your own table setting skills, use your best cutlery and china pieces and you are able to instruct your children in the proper etiquette of fine dining.
Not only can you take advantage of more occasions to use the cutlery and other dining items, you will be appreciative of those who will compliment you on your taste and style. Luckily the placement of cutlery has stayed true to its original roots, so once you have the proper placement ingrained in memory, you will no longer feel uneasy or embarrassed when faced with the need to construct a beautiful and properly arranged table.
The rules that govern proper cutlery settings state that you will place the setting pieces in order of their use for each course. In the distant past, particularly during the heyday of the Victorian era, there were often many courses and each of these would have a corresponding piece of cutlery. In this era you would have had many pieces at each guest's place setting. Today this is a less daunting challenge, so there is no need for you to feel as though you cannot do it.
With a proper setting, you must arrange the cutlery pieces in a specific pattern. The soup spoon goes to the right and the only flatware to the right of this would be a cocktail or seafood fork. The knife is to the left of the spoon and next to the plate, with the blade facing the plate. On the far left will be the forks. This is the basic rule for you to learn and know. Once you have this established in your mind, the rest is easy.
You will only need to make the rest of your table service look as good as your cutlery settings. You may choose a cloth for covering the entire dining table, this could be any type of cloth as long as it is of nice fabric and appropriate for the situation at hand. There also needs to be quality china arranged with care. A fine centerpiece and candles would add a nice touch to your meal as well.
You will want to use your best dinnerware in situations such as these, but if the affair is to be slightly more casual, you can choose others and still mange to have a very well set table. You may choose even plastic over china and get much of the same effect as long as you have lovely cutlery arranged with it.
