Ibiza is the third largest of the Balearic Islands. Popular with the hippy community during the 1960's, Ibiza is best known today for its wild nightlife, with clubs such as Space, Cream and Privilege famous throughout Europe. The island is more than just a party capital though - Ibiza also boasts some beautiful scenery, unspoilt villages of whitewashed houses, historic attractions and fine sandy beaches.



The island's capital, Ibiza Town (also known as Eivissa), has a beautiful old quarter of whitewashed alleyways and cobbled streets, which has recently been made a World Heritage Site. Highlights of this walled citadel, known as Dalt Vila, include the Gothic cathedral of Nuestra Senora de las Nieves dating from the 13th century, and the recently restored hilltop castle. Nightlife in Ibiza Town is centred on the Sa Penya district. The island's oldest nightclub, Pacha, which has been running for more than 30 years, is located in this area.

To the south of Ibiza Town is the resort of Playa d'en Bossa, which has the longest Blue Flag beach on Ibiza. Two popular nightclubs, Space and Bora Bora, are both located here, as is the Aguamar water park. South of Playa d'en Bossa is one of the island's most important natural attractions - the salt flats of Ses Salines. Now a national park, Ses Salines provides an important refuge for flamingoes and other water birds. The beaches in this area, many of which are popular with naturists, are considered some of the most beautiful on the island.

The resort of Santa Eulalia is situated a few miles north of Ibiza Town. Popular with families and couples, this classy tourist destination has retained its pretty old quarter complete with 16th century whitewashed church. A short distance from Santa Eulalia, and boasting a picturesque location alongside pine woods, is the resort of Es Cana. This small town is best known for the large 'hippy' market, which is held here every Wednesday. Another resort near Santa Eulalia, also benefiting from a superb setting next to a beautiful bay, is the relaxed resort of Cala Llonga.

Many of the island's best-known nightclubs, including Es Paradis and Eden, are situated in the West End area of San Antonio. As well as its hectic nightlife, the resort also has several fine beaches, some of which are set within small sheltered coves. Ferry trips to other local beaches are available from the marina. San Antonio also offers plenty of watersports to help keep visitors occupied during the day.

Ibiza's northwest coastline is characterised by some beautiful beaches and a series of small coves. Resorts in this area include Puerto San Miguel and Portinatx, both of which provide a good base for discovering some of the island's picturesque inland villages. The northern half of Ibiza, notable for its densely wooded landscape, is popular with walkers and cyclists.

Ibiza's airport is situated about 5 miles (8km) southwest of Ibiza Town. There is an hourly bus service from the airport to the town centre during the daytime. From the capital there are buses to most destinations on the island.
