Although there are many areas where the internet has been a boon for dissemination of information, one of the most exciting advances is in the field of learning languages online. It has long been know that the most effective way of learning a new language total immersion in the language, 24 hours per day, and 7 days per week. Even for an adult, typically this type of regimen will mean approximately 6 weeks to understanding and being able to function at a rudimentary level in the language. A child will pick up the basics of the language usually in less time.
Since total immersion in the language and culture is usually not an option for most people, a good second choice is to find one of the many internet sites which provide a way of learning languages online, pick your language and begin the process. Depending on the internet site, you will hear native speakers pronounce the words, see the written words, write (type) the exercises, view pictures to make the connection between the spoken/written word and the activity, and finally—be tested on your grasp of the material.
Many of the sites offer beginning lessons at little or no cost, others expect payment. The advantages of self-study are several: Immediate feedback and correction of errors (except in pronunciation); work at a pace which is comfortable for you; and low cost learning.
In addition to the formal education classes for learning languages online, the internet has another significant advantage for language learning. A person is able to make contact with people from almost every country in the world now, and many who come into chat rooms are as anxious to practice English, as you are to practice another language. There are even chat rooms devoted to the purpose of language learning.
It A Small World After All
People view this world as a big world; a world with many different countries, separated by great distances and different languages. It was difficult to communicate back in the days, where many misunderstanding took place between different cultures. But through improvement in communication, specifically the internet, the gap now seems smaller and in turn, the world is smaller than before.
Communication is the process of conveying information from a sender to a receiver with the use of a media, such as words through speech and writing, pictures, music, etc. in which the communicated information is understood by both sender and the receiver. It would only work if both parties know the same language or understand the same gestures. If both the sender and the receiver have the different idea for a certain media there would be a lot of misunderstanding, such as the sound 'hi' carries a meaning of greeting in English, but it means yes in Japanese. Even some gestures are different, for example, a hand gesture that makes a ring shape with the thumb and the index figure while stretching out the other three fingers to mean okay in some countries mean money or coins in others.
With all the differences, people have been communicating none the less. People have been learning languages and cultures through people from the different countries or through people who have visited the country. And ultimately, with the introduction and wide distribution of the internet, it has become easier to communicate with people far away through different methods. While only communicating using a certain language would be limited, people can communicate online using pictures, diagrams, music, and even videos. Many mediums can be used to communicate thoughts across countries and would have less conflicts as well as more input from many nations.
There is a unique way of communication online called social network service. It focuses on building online communities of people from different parts of the earth, where they can not only share information to the public, but interests and activities to look for people with same interests. It is a powerful new way to communicate and share information. People from different countries with who speak different languages with same interests can bond and communicate through online translators and become one.
Social network service websites like MySpace, Xanga or WetPaint each have their own unique platform and interests. Although all networks generally allow users to create a profile for themselves with similar information, they concentrate on different things, for example, MySpace and Xanga concentrates on personal bonding and relationships with people while WetPaint concentrates on information sharing through common interests using the wiki platform. Though most websites concentrate on relationship between users, certain communities like WetPaint are made to easy access to more accurate and concentrated information than a regular search engine since a community of experts in the desired field is available to you in the community. Through the improvement of methods to communicate, the world today really seems smaller. Who knows what will happen next.
