Lack Of Sleep Problems

    View:
I have read varying opinions as to the impact trouble sleeping has on one's overall health. One of the most important things to remember, if you can't sleep for a night or two, is it will not have much of a negative impact on your performance the following day. So, if you are lying in bed at 2:00 in the morning and can't sleep, don't start worrying. You will be fine tomorrow. You will have an occasional night where you will not sleep well; you will then call on your adrenaline supply a little more than normal the following day. Also your fatigue after one night will not be that bad. The problems will be worse if you worry too much about the lack of sleep. Worrying about it will make it harder to fall asleep. Any sleep and rest that you are able to get will help you tomorrow, so don't get so stressed that you end up getting no sleep. There is no question that, if your lack of sleeping lasts over a period of time, your performance will ultimately start to diminish.

Our bodies change in many ways as we get older. Sleep is no different. Realizing that changes in sleep are a common part of aging will provide you with a sense of control over sleep. As we age, the amount of sleep we obtain changes, sleep decreases from sixteen to eighteen hours a day in newborns to nearly ten hours for ten-year-olds and to approximately eight hours during the teenage years. We sleep about seven hours a night in middle age and by our seventies sleep time decreases to roughly six and half hours. However, we compensate by obtaining about an hour of additional sleep in the form of daytime naps.

Experiments have been done with volunteers who tried to reduce their sleep from the usual seven and half hours to five and a half hours by decreasing their sleep by thirty minutes every two weeks. Most of the volunteers had little trouble reducing sleep by a half-hour, or even an hour, but they began to notice some difficulty when sleep was reduced by more than this. They were able to awaken on time, and they were able to function at work and in their social life, but they found themselves simply more fatigued. The sleep reduction did not seem to pose a threat to anyone's health, but they found themselves to be more irritable, more pessimistic, and less fun to be with. For most adults, reduction in the amount of sleep is possible, but fatigued and changes in mood make it undesirable. It is estimated that about half of the adult North American population is already sleep deprived and any further reduction would have marked changes on mood and performance.

The amount you sleep does affect your chances of living longer. There was a study conducted by the American Cancer Society for over a period of six years with one million Americans in San Francisco. Their survival was rated against many lifestyle factors, including sleep patterns. Surprisingly, men who slept four hours a night or less had a mortality rates ten times greater than that of those who slept between seven and eight hours. It seemed that any deviation from usual sleep requirements for adults of six to eight hours was accompanied by a significant increased risk of mortality. In fact, the National Center for Health Service Research in the United States considers adequate sleep one of the six most important factors affecting illness and death rates; the other lifestyle factors include regular exercise, not smoking, limited consumption of alcohol, regular meal schedules, and maintenance of proper weight.
Lack Of Sleep Problems
How do you usually sleep at night? Are you able to sleep just as soon as you lay your head down on the bed? Maybe you're finding it quite difficult to fall asleep and you keep spending the night tossing and turning. If so, you are one of the many people who is not so lucky about dozing off at night. If aren't so lucky, you may have to resort to a number of other possibilities that can help you to sleep properly and lead you to a more healthy life in the near future. Of course, some of the best possibilities include natural sleep aids.

People prefer natural sleep aids because they don't carry the stigma that prescription drugs may have. Prescription drugs are often associated with addictive tendencies and they make people nervous to be taken in excess. You had hoped you would be able to relax more and instead you end up climbing the walls! That is not the solution that most people want. Instead, natural sleep aids have become much more popular.

Because herbal and aromatic products are extremely popular today, it is extremely common to take them for any sleep related problem. For instance, they are great in helping us to counter that headache or work stress that is often caused by too little sleep or too much anxiety. Aromatic and herbal varieties like Chamomile, Passion Flower, Lemon Balm and Valerian Root are just a few of the more common herbal medications that can help your sleeping problem. Each herb is used in a different way and can be chosen for its convenience depending on what your preferences are.

Chamomile is typically used in tea and is especially nice because it helps with both stress and better digestion. It is traditionally added to hot water and the mild floral scent helps people with insomnia. Today, a variety of chamomile teas are being sold readily and are often used as a sleep aid or in combination with other treatments.

Other herbs include Lavender, Passion Flower and Lemon Balm. Lavender, though it can't be taken internally as a tea, is popular for its aromatic oil. It is usually rubbed on the neck and wrists before the person goes to sleep. Another herb is Passion Flower which is a great medication for insomnia. It is widely considered to be a gentle sedative and is sometimes used as an oil for mild muscle relaxation, a tea for drinking or caplets for swallowing. Lemon Balm is used in tea preparations also. It is boiled in water and, after straining, its leaves produce a medicinal effect. It also produces an oil which can be used in the treatment of insomnia.

Valerian Root is a rather controversial herb because it has been found to be somewhat addictive. Some people tend to use it for long period of continuous sleep and become Dependant upon it. Still, it is considered to be a potent remedy for many people. A safer option may be the natural solution of warm milk. Although it isn't an aromatic or an herbal remedy, milk can be served warm and can help to induce sleep through its amino acid, Trypthopan.

All of these herbs mentioned are just a few of the choices of natural sleep aids that can help to combat the difficulties you may have with sleeping. The most important aid is to establish a healthy schedule! A good uninterrupted night's sleep can assure an individual of a long productive day at work or at home. It enables him or her to regain their lost energy after a grueling day. It also helps in rejuvenating a person's sore and exhausted body. This makes you ready to face the world with a big smile and a renewed source of energy.

Every individual needs ample time for sleep. It helps us repair the muscles that wear out during the day and to fend off illnesses and accidents that might otherwise have befallen us. Everybody needs at least 8 hours of continuous and sound sleep. A little attention and care in your schedule and you should be able to manage quite well. Then, you will be well on your way to achieving the most natural remedy of all!
