The technology that drives the humble battery has definitely boomed of late, with more exotic materials being inculcated into the structure of these small power cells to boost their longevity and increase their reliability. From the iron to lead acid, to alkaline and not the lithium battery, there are so many permutations available on the consumer market. Today, this article will discuss a little bit about the lithium manganese batteries and explain to you about the intricacies that drive this technological wonder – a wonder that is powering more and more portable appliances around the world today.

These small batteries are primarily known to the world as disposable small batteries that use either a lithium metal or many of the known lithium compounds transformed into an anode within the battery. These small cells can produce a staggering amount of voltage that can range from just above 1 volt to just below 4 volts of electricity, which is far higher than their alkaline counterparts. These batteries are a favourite for many consumers and producers to be used within portable electrical devices. One of the most common forms of the lithium cell that is more slanted towards consumer use is the one that uses a metallic form of lithium as the anode and manganese dioxide as the cathode, with a small amount of lithium salt to be used as the organic solvent necessary to facilitate the current to travel from the anode to the cathode of the battery. The manganese dioxide cathode is heat treated and a lithium perchlorate in a propylene carbonate and dimehtoxythane is used.

Do not be confused too much by the chemical names, just know that this is the most common form of the lithium battery that is available. Its normal voltage is about 3V and its open circuit voltage can reach as high as 3.7. The production of these batteries normally would incur very cheap materials, and because of this it corners more than 75% of the total lithium battery consumer market. Its ease of production and availability make it a very popular solution indeed. It is suitable for mostly low load appliance that have a low drain factor. These include small flashlights, digital cameras and even forms of digital music equipment. Some of the characteristics also include a very high energy density when compared to its internal mass and volume. Like most batteries, it must be handled with care, as exposure to heat and other extreme elements will most likely cause it to explode.

Do not expose it to places where the temperature might exceed 60 degrees Celsius. There are many safety regulations abound for this battery, and this includes air travel, which does not allow free and unlatched lithium batteries to be placed in a checked or even carry on luggage. The reason for this is that the lithium batteries are prone to high discharges and can even explode if the right conditions are met. These are some information on the lithium manganese battery and hopefully, it has given you more insight into the characteristics and technology of the battery.
