Synchronically, I was told about and bought the book by Kathleen Bartholomew, RN, MN, called "Ending Nurse-To-Nurse Hostility: Why Nurses Eat Their Young And Each Other."



I consider myself blessed because I work in a supportive environment with my colleagues. Yet the problems described in the book, and by my new friend, outline patterns of behavior that nurses have developed in recent years due to the ideocyncrities of the profession that point to the subjection of women and nurses by proxy. As much as I don't want to look, I see all of this where I work, as well.

Forinstance, the following observations and statistics were eye opening:

1) The United States Justice Department reported 429,100 violent crimes against nurses on duty from 1993-1999

2) That nurses are an oppressed group, as characterized by in- fighting, back-biting, and the inability to honestly communicate with one another

3) That nurses are a subordinate group as characterized by the fact that Doctors and administrators devalue the caring aspect of nursing responsibilities

4) And this devaluing directly results in burnout, and what is called horizontal hostility, or aggression between nurses

Nurses are the foundation of the health-care industry. We are losing nurses without replacing them because of this culture of hostility, overwork, and alienation.

In Kathleen Bartholomew's book: "Ending Nurse-To-Nurse Hostility: Why Nurses Eat Their Young And Each Other," she concluded that management must take the lead to change the organization from the top, down.

Horizontal hostility defined as a consistent pattern of behavior designed to control, diminish or devalue another, is a rampant problem where nurses are employed.

Yet it all starts with feelings of low self-esteem and self-worth, co-dependency issues, all leading to a sense that nursing and nurses are invisible in our society.

Yet, I am convinced that all work of healing must begin within ourselves, within myself.

If I create my own reality, which every one of us does, then if I don't like what I see on the outside, which mirrors my internal world, then I must get back to the task of loving and healing myself, starting from within myself.

Dr. Joe Vitale explains this in a recent letter to his e-mail list, which is, as follows:

"In my new book, "Zero Limits," I talk about the unusual therapist who helped heal an entire hospital ward of mentally ill criminals -- without seeing any of them.

"I've since learned his method for healing, which involves "cleaning" yourself of all negativity in order to see change in others.

"It seems bizarre, but when you take care of your own issues, they disappear in other people.

"The whole idea is to love the problems away. You do it by saying "I love you," and a few other statements, non-stop. I've been doing it for two years now and my life is astonishing. I live in an almost moment-by-moment state of bliss.

"Once I learned this method, I started to use it on other things besides illness. Since I'm a practical metaphysician and an entrepreneur, I wanted to see if this wild method would work on sales and other bottom line results.

"Whenever I would write an article -- much like this one -- I would send love into it.

"Whenever I would write another book -- like my new one, "Zero Limits" -- I would keep saying "I love you" in my mind.

"What I noticed is my emails and articles would get read and distributed to *millions* of people.

"And my book, "Zero Limits," became an Amazon bestseller -- six months *before* it was published.

"But I didn't stop there in my testing.

So rather than complicate the issue with Nursing Theory and making others change or thinking that "they" should, I have opted to try this simple technique to create the kind of workplace and world I want to live in.

And guess what?

When I change my mind, everything around me changes.
