Once you have got great lyrics and a great instrumental arrangement, the making of a singles chart hit song you need to commercialize and make it appealing to the audiences; there is no point in having a success if it's going to get lost in the bunch of rancid songs that make hit because of one simple thing: A music video.



Technology has advanced at great speed. Every day there are more and more tools to making things attractive to the senses especially sight, obviously a music video appeals to ear and eye but how effective is it really? There is no point in giving figures or in saying that 60% of the people who buys an CD seeks the song with the most attractive music video even if all the other songs of the disc are a dud; and no use divulging that almost 30% of the one hit wonders have managed to have some sort of a career thanks to a well carried out music video.

The best way to make a point is to go back in time. Let's not go too far back and settle in the 80's. Performers like Maddonna and Michael Jackson are good examples of the advantages of great music videos, of course, both of them have developed successful social music styles and big money-making careers, but what would have happened to them if "Thriller" lacked of the visual effects that made it grand? Would you have bought his album if you hadn't seen the video?

The most probable thing is that you wouldn't. Sometimes the song in itself and the performers performance is not optimal and you can not really distinguish what it's being said, this is particularly true for foreign stars (remember Tarkan?) the music video generated for the song will often give you all the elements you need to identify with the song and the performer. These elements are the key to making a good, average, poor or excellent video.

Of course, the eye is the most reluctant sense to be seduced. We like beauty and we need it to be abundant and to relate adequately to our own personal perception of it; you might not like Degas and believe that ballerinas lack of interest while consider Botero's work excels and magnificent; you need to adapt your idea of a music video to the environment and surrounding to which it is going to be presented.

Some producers tend to believe that almost any situation can be romantic?But can it be romantic? This is when the surroundings come into place, if the music calls for a joyous occasion, dressing the singer in white in the far east will be considered in poor taste since they were white for funerals and other gloom occasions; if love is in the air, certainly a prisoner can fall in love as does an assassin and a soldier but a war, prison and a murder scene seem hardly the right place to ambiance a romantic video.

The best way to go about this is to analyze all the music videos you can of the genre you are interested on, whether you are doing a music video or doing a school report, analyzing and studying will give you the insight you require to fulfill more adequately your requirements.
